Travelers on their way to explore stunning Machu Picchu first travel through Cusco, the world-famous historic capital of Peru. Located high in the Andes Mountains, Cusco is a unique city with a rich mixture of both colonial Spanish and Incan architecture.

A typical charming street, Cusco, Peru
While exploring the city’s Incan walls and cobblestone streets, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. Distinctive Inca stonework seamlessly merges with colonial churches, museums, and other architectural gems; and the bustle of the city’s vendors and visitors remind you that you are still in the 21st century.
At the beginning of your Cusco city tour, you will be inspired as you walk through the Plaza de Armas into the Cathedral. Even though the Cathedral is a perfect display of colonial Spanish architecture, unique Incan influences can be seen throughout the church, especially with the interior gold décor and paintings by Cusquena artists.
Afterward, your Cusco city tour will take you to the incredible Incan ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay that surround the city. Cusco, with its distinctive history and character, will surely be a city you will never forget.
The next day of this Peru travel package tour is a breathtaking trip into the Sacred Valley. You will feel like you are a part of the Incan community as you interact with Incan descendents, many of whom wear traditional clothing and practice the same lifestyles and handicrafts for over 500 years. You can see women spinning wool from sheep or llama into one of the garments that you will surely see in one of the markets.

For lunch you will be able to try some of the many delicious Andean cuisines of the area. And for the really adventurous, you can even try the local delicacy, cuy (guinea pig)!
One of the best parts of this tour is the visit to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Your climb to the top of these Incan-built terraces will provide you with a spectacular view of Ollantaytambo and the surrounding valley. These vistas are breathtaking, as you can see the dust and sun-drenched valley with its ox-plowed fields, Spanish tile roofs, and the meandering river, but these sights are only a taste of the beauty and majesty that surrounds the city in the sky, Machu Picchu, now considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Your journey will be rewarded with incredible views on all sides of this majestic city in the sky. Nothing can prepare you for the feeling you will get when you first approach the site. The dramatic landscape that surrounds the ruins provides an exceptional backdrop to this truly special place. You can take as many photos as you want, but none of them will be able to capture the magnificent majesty of Machu Picchu.

We just got back from this trip…and it was amazing! One of the surprise bonuses was that the train has windows in the roof so you can see all around AND they serve an excellent gourmet meal or snack, depending on what time you are on the train!

Wow, Peru! I have seen a lot of photos of the place but never had the chance to be there. I am hoping that someday I’d be able to get here. I love the Machu, Pichu…this is the first thing I’d check out when I reach the place. :)
