Outrageous. That is probably the best word to describe Brazil’s most famous event, the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world flock to the vibrant cultural capital of Brazil in February every year to attend the event. Tickets and hotels are booked months in advance so now is the time to plan your trip to Brazil if you wish to be a part of the 2012 Rio Carnival, that will be held from February 17th to 21st.

Throughout the festival, music and dance literally invade all parts of the city and its inhabitants. Day and night, people gather in the streets to show off their samba moves, musical talents, complicated costumes, and more than anything, to have fun and share their culture and cheerfulness with the rest of the world.

Samba is at the heart of the Rio Carnival. This typical Brazilian dance and music originated in the Afro-Brazilian community in the 17th, 18th, and 19th century, and is now one of the core elements of the Brazilian culture. The term samba derives from the Angolan word “semba” which referred to a type of ritual music in African countries.

During Carnival, all the best samba schools of Rio participate in a contest, the Samba Parade, the highlight of the entire week. Each school represents a specific neighborhood, with its own dances, music, and costumes. They practice for months before the Carnival to make sure they put on the best show in the Sambodromo, a gigantic hall where the parade takes place every year.

Other noteworthy events are the Carnival Balls, which are held in all the most popular venues in the city. The most famous (and expensive) one takes place at the Copacabana Palace, a 5-star luxury resort. If you’re on a budget, there are many other balls to attend, with tickets ranging from $70 to $150. Everyone dresses up in shiny party costumes and come to the ball to dance the night away. There are balls scheduled every night during the length of the Carnival. Check out the official Rio Carnival 2012 website to find the detailed program.

Of course, there are also ways to partake in the festivities without spending too much money. It can be expensive to purchase tickets to the Samba Parade or to the various balls. However, it’s free to enjoy the hundreds of bands and parties that take to the streets every day. Some parties are held in specific places, such as the city’s parks, and others are processions of dancers and merrymakers that just follow bands as they play. The largest street party takes place in Cinelandia Square. And even if you don’t have a ticket to the parade, it’s worth taking a look outside the Sambodromo on parade days as the street is generally packed with people that just want to join in on the fun.

The fifth largest country in the world and largest country in South America, with a population of over 190 million, Brazil is one of those countries you would need months to explore fully. The enchanting warm culture, the spectacular white sand beaches all along the Atlantic coast, and the jungle towns are only a few reasons why anyone should visit Brazil.

June is one of the busiest months of the year in terms of cultural events in Brazil, and probably one of the best times to immerse yourself in the rich Brazilian culture, and soak up the sun in some of its most picturesque beach towns. Read this guide to Brazil’s cultural calendar in June and start planning your exciting Brazil vacation. Although this is a time when temperatures can drop, as it coincides with the South American winter, the country enjoys a mild and pleasant climate year round. Just pack a light sweater for the chillier nights and you’re ready to go!

June is a month of many religious celebrations in Brazil, which are generally held with great excitement and always involve massive festivities. Most of the population is fervently catholic and the country almost seems to come to a halt to celebrate Christianity. The main commemoration, Corpus Christi, celebrating the Holy Sacrament during the Last Supper between Jesus Christ and his disciples, is one of the most important days in the Catholic calendar, and will be held on June 23rd this year.

This is a national holiday, so be prepared for most shops and some restaurants to be closed. Some of the most impressive festivities are held in Sao Paulo. Streets are covered with colorful carpets made of wooden shavings and other materials representing scenes of the Last Supper, and the city gives way to the joyful and moving “March for Jesus,” a parade that moves to the sounds of live Christian bands leading the way on decorated trucks.

Known as the Festas Juninas (June parties), a tradition imported from Portugal under colonial times, the celebrations of Saint Anthony (June 12th), Saint John the Baptist (June 24th), and Saint Peter (29th) punctuate the month and are observed throughout the country with festivities including live music, food, and of course Catholic ceremonies.

If you’re not so much into religious celebrations, don’t worry; Brazil holds many other noteworthy events in June that will make for unforgettable sights and memories. If you are traveling to Brazil with your other half, this is the perfect moment to show them your love on Brazil’s Valentine’s Day, known as the Dia dos Namorados, on June 12th. The day is celebrated widely all over Brazil with lavish parties on the same day as Saint Anthony’s day, who is the saint patron of marriage. Another curious tradition which has made its way through the centuries is for single girls to pray to Saint Anthony on this day so he will find them a husband.

Every year in June, Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most avant-garde city, is home to the world’s largest and most exciting Gay Pride Parade (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transvestites and Transexual Pride Parade, or LGBT). This year, the 15th edition of the parade will overcome the entire city on June 26th with over 4 million people are expected to attend.

Be prepared to be shocked and dazzled as you find yourself taken in the whirl of music, costumes, and partying. Gigantic theme-decorated trucks ride throughout the city with thousands of followers dancing to the sounds of loud music and slogans. The slogan for 2011 will be “Love one another. Enough with homophobia”. The first parade was held in 1997 with a mere 2,000 participants, and is today one of the most long-awaited festivities in the country. And if you can’t make it to Brazil in June, Rio de Janeiro will be housing its own edition of the Gay Pride Parade on November 14, 2011. Book your Rio de Janeiro tour now and take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Border and immigration. These sound like scary words, but they are a necessary part of traveling to foreign countries, and with the proper information, these words are nothing to fear. With this guide to immigration restrictions and visa measures enforced in various South American countries, never again will you find yourself stuck at immigrations. You just have to make sure to pack everything, bring a good book and sunscreen—and that’s all you’ll need to worry about.

Just like most countries in the world, the majority of countries in Latin America require travelers to have a passport valid up until at least 6 months after they enter the country. So before you even start booking your trip to South America, make sure you have a passport and that it is valid for this duration of time. It can take up to 6 weeks to get a new passport, so don’t wait until the last minute (although there are some emergency procedures for specific cases).

Now, for country specific regulations:

Peru

Nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union do not need a visa to visit Peru. Touristic stays of up to 183 days are allowed in Peru. You will generally be given a 90-day stamp upon arrival at the international airport, but if you wish to stay longer and travel in the country, you can just ask the immigration officer for a 6-month stamp.

The airport in Lima—so far the only international airport in Peru—charges an international tax of approximately $30 USD upon departure from the country. However, most international airlines now include this fee in the flight ticket, but if it is not included when you purchase your flight, you’ll be required to pay it before you leave.

Argentina

Nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union do not require a visa to visit Argentina, and touristic stays of up to 3 months are allowed in Argentina. Touristic stamps are valid for several entries in the country within their period of validity, making it easier to travel cross country on your Argentina vacation. But, be aware that all citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia will be charged a reciprocity fee upon entry in Argentina. As of 2011, the tax amounts to $100 USD for Australians, $70 USD for Canadians, and $140 USD for Americans.

Brazil

Citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia must have a visa to visit Brazil. Make sure to contact the Brazilian embassy or consulate in your home country in order to obtain your visa prior to travel. Check out the list of Brazilian embassies and consulates in the world and find the one closest to your home. Procedures take approximately 2-3 weeks, so it is important to submit your visa application about 4-6 weeks before your intended travel date. But don’t do it too early either because your visa is only valid 90 days after its issuance.

US citizens need to fill in an e-application form, print it, and make an appointment with the Brazilian embassy using the online scheduling system. You’ll need to bring the form with a passport, picture, and travel documents. Find here the online application form for Brazil visas. Disregard the security warning that will pop up when you click on the link as this is a secure site and the error message only comes from the Brazil channel which is not automatically recognized by international internet browsers yet.

Nationals of the United States will need to pay a $140 USD reciprocity fee to enter Brazil; the fee is $65 USD for Canadians. Citizens of European Union countries are exempts from any visa requirements and entrance fees.

Chile

Nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union do not need a visa for touristic stays up to 3 months in Chile. However, if you are from the USA, Canada, or Australia, you will need to pay a reciprocity fee of respectively $131, $132, and $61 USD.

Located a mere 450 miles (725 km) from the southern tip of the world, Eolo Lodge is a drop of refinement clinging to the wild, rugged steppe of Argentina’s Patagonia. The 17 room estancia-style lodge is fitted with a whitewashed exterior that matches the distant ice capped peaks, but blazes defiantly against the 9,885 acres (4,000 hectares) of burnished La Anita Valley landscape. Large windows offer astonishing views of the desolate landscape, but to truly appreciate the sweeping isolation, hop on a horse, gallop across the void and experience a real Patagonia travel adventure.

Argentina, El Calafate: Eolo

2. Peru, Puno: Casa Andina Isla Suasi

Isla Suasi, a private island ringed by the pristine waters of Lake Titicaca, tempts visitors with its stunning scenery, lulling isolation, and five star eco-resort. Casa Andina Private Collection Isla Suasi, the only accommodation on this serene island, is an indulgent treat of rustic luxury, outdoor adventure, and culinary delight. Its 24 rooms contain cloud-like beds, wood burning fireplaces, and panoramic lake views. Cozy up under the covers, meanderer the cobblestone courtyards, or explore the rugged island outskirts; wherever you go, the view will follow. Explore this spectacular region in style on your Lake Titicaca tour.

3. Chile, San Pedro de Atacama: Alto Atacama Desert Lodge

The Atacama Desert is the driest place on earth, but don’t let that stop you from visiting Alto Atacama Desert Lodge, because its barren, rain-deprived landscape is one of the most stunning and humbling places in the world. The Lodge is so skillfully designed that it seems to merge with the rust-colored Salt Mountain Range, concealing the hotel’s interior modern luxury.

4. Ecuador, Baños: Luna Runtun

No place is better for soaking up the scenery in Baños, Ecuador, than Hotel Luna Runtun. The picturesque mountaintop cottage complex faces the mighty Tungurahua Volcano and the verdant Llanganates National Park. Lavish pools and spas carved into the cliff overlook the town below, creating the elevated aura of a Mount Olympus playground with Greek god guests lounging in luxury. Enhance your Ecuador vacation with a stay at this excellent hotel.

5. Brazil, Ilha Grande: Pousada Naturalia

Surrounded by lush rainforest and lapping azul waters, a stay at Pousada Naturalia Hotel is like accepting a hug from Mother Nature. Bask on your balcony or lounge in your hammock and remind yourself that the tranquil island’s scenery isn’t a postcard, it’s real.

Brazil, Ilha Grande: Pousada Naturalia

6. Peru, Machu Picchu: Sanctuary Lodge

Machu Picchu. Need we say more? One of the 7 New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is the most spectacular historical destination in South America. Secluded and separated from modern development by a laborious trek and imposing mountain peaks, the site remains as impressive now as it was decades ago. Only one hotel, the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, neighbors the citadel. Several rooms have mountain views and show a sliver of the site, but the real attraction is the ability to linger at the ruins before, and long after, everyone else is gone.

Peru, Machu Picchu: Sanctuary Lodge

7. Costa Rica, Arenal: Arenal Observatory Lodge

Experience a bedroom eruption like none other at Arenal Observatory Lodge, one of the most luxurious Arenal hotels. Here guests can lounge in bed and admire the active Arenal Volcano, just two miles from the hotel, as it seeps glowing lava and puffs black smoke. Now that’s hot.

Costa Rica, Arenal: Arenal Observatory Lodge

8. Peru, Puno: Libertador Lake Titicaca

Watch the sun creep over the horizon and crawl across the calm waters of the highest navigable lake in the world, turning the already vibrantly-colored waters into a sparkling sapphire sea. Hotel Libertador rests on the shore of Isla Esteves on Lake Titicaca. Its 123 rooms are all luxurious with elegant décor, but no man-made design can compare to the natural display flaunted just outside the panoramic windows.

Peru, Puno: Libertador Lake Titicaca

9. Argentina, Iguazú Falls: Sheraton

Guests at the Sheraton Iguazú Resort can marvel at the mighty Iguazú Falls, hear its roaring torrent, and almost taste the spray, all without leaving their room. Tucked inside the Iguazú National Park, this large and luxurious hotel is only a mile from the waterfalls and walking distance from all of the park’s exciting attractions.

Argentina, Iguazú Falls: Sheraton

10. Peru, Colca Canyon: Colca Lodge

At Colca Lodge, a glance out your window is a time machine back to ancient times. Situated in a river valley ringed by pre-Inca agricultural terraces, this luxurious nature-inspired lodge is an ideal place to experience an exciting Colca Canyon tour. Relax in natural hot springs and admire how the hotel’s adobe walls, thatched roofs, and stone pathways harmonize with the agrarian landscape.

According to the Mayan Calendar, among others, the world is set to end on December 21, 2012. Massive earthquakes, flooding, and tsunamis aren’t encouraging signs either. Instead of stocking up your bomb shelter, why not buy a plane ticket, get out and see the world before it all ends. After all, if the world is going to end, you don’t need to leave anything in the bank. If you want to save a little money in case all it is all a false alarm, South America is a great place for budget travel. It’s the perfect place to expand your horizons whether you choose to jam to beats on a Brazilian beach or summit glaciers in Chile. Fill the next two years or so that you have left with meaningful experiences. Spot an endangered species in the Galápagos, dance the tango with a sexy Porteño, golf at the highest course in the world in La Paz, learn about the mysterious Rapa Nui on Easter Island, and explore wild Patagonia. Here is a must see list to get through before December 21, 2012.

Amazon, Brazil: The United Nations have declared 2011 the International Year of the Forest. Sounds like the perfect time to hug a tree. As global warming and deforestation continues, the chances to spot fascinating wildlife in the rainforest become smaller so hurry to the beautiful region before it is too late.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina: This force of nature is made up of 275 separate cascades which thunder over basalt rock down 250 feet. Be splashed by the powerful cascade’s mist at this unforgettable sight. Iguazu Falls are set on the border of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay so you can easily make it to at least three countries before the apocalypse.

Iguazu Falls

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador: As Charles Darwin did some 200 years ago, marvel at the creatures found nowhere else on earth. These rough and rocky isles are home to a wonderfully strange, abundant, and extraordinarily fearless wildlife.

Machu Picchu, Peru: Follow the path of the Incas into the Sacred Valley to the sun gate outside of Machu Picchu, or take the train through the cloud forests. In an almost impossible location high in the Andes, you can admire the mysterious and well preserved site. Machu Picchu survived the Spanish conquest, and it may not be a bad place to hide out in December 2012.

Machu Picchu

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia: The highest and largest salt lake in the world is at a dizzying altitude of 3,650 meters. Driving across it may be one of the most peculiar experiences around. If the bright blue skies contrasting with the white salt crust aren’t enough for you, visit the striking soda lakes. The red Laguna Colorada and the jade green Laguna Verde are located in a surreal desert landscape.

Easter Island, Chile: Nearly 2,500 miles west of Chile’s coast is one of the world’s most legendary sites. Easter Island is a nature and culture lover’s dream destination in the Pacific Ocean. Be amazed by the 20,000 archeological sites, rich culture of the Rapa Nui, volcanoes, marine wildlife, and white sand beaches.

Patagonia, Chile: In South America’s southern frontier, nature grows wild, barren, and beautiful. On this crowded planet it is strangely satisfying to encounter silence, large spaces, jagged peaks, and pristine waters. Get away from it all and enjoy the serenity of the spectacular infinite landscapes of Patagonia.

Torres del Paine in Patagonia

La Paz, Bolivia: Have your breath taken away by the highest capital city in the world. This city’s eccentric beauty sets it apart from other South American cities. Fly into the world’s highest commercial airport, golf at the highest golf course, and ski on the highest slope, just to say that you did.

Lake Titicaca, Peru: While you’re making your round of the “highest” destinations, be sure to hit up the highest navigable lake in the world. Shared by Peru and Bolivia, this shimmering blue lake is home to fascinating native communities living on floating reed islands in complete isolation from the rest of the world.

Buenos Aires, Argentina: The most attractive capital in South America, Buenos Aires is a bustling and cosmopolitan city with countless attractions and a unique atmosphere. Be transported in a whirl of thrills as you explore the buzzing capital of tango.

For travelers hoping to see two of South America’s highlights, it just got a little bit easier. The airline LAN recently announced new routes to bring you closer to Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Easter Island off the coast of Chile. These new routes begin in Miami, New York City, and Los Angeles with a layover in Lima, Peru. These latest flight options reduce travel times and lower airfare costs. Fortunately these appealing new options are now available because both Easter Island and Iguazu Falls are well worth seeing.

The impressive Iguazu Falls

The Foz do Iguaçu, or Iguazu Falls, is a force of nature. The 275 separate cascades make up a thunderous flow over basalt rock which gushes over 250 feet down, hence the meaning of “Iguazu” which means “big water” in Guarani, the regional indigenous language. At the Devil’s Throat, the largest waterfall in the circuit, water plunges over a U-shaped cataract that is 490 by 2300 feet. Spectators can get close enough to be surrounded by 260° of water. Numerous catwalks allow visitors to view and experience Iguazu Falls from many angles. Another possibility for prime viewing capabilities is a helicopter tour around the falls.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush rainforest and a reddish soil that contrasts with the green canopy. The Parque Nacional Foz do Iguaçu is well worth exploring and there are many peaceful hikes where you will have the chance to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Keep your eyes open for brown capuchin monkeys and colorful birds such as toucans. The town offers plenty to do and has a large choice of hotels, restaurants, and shops. This UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site lies on the border between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay so while visiting the falls you can easily make your way into three South American countries and have even more to brag to your friends and family about.

Another South American escapade to be proud of is a trip to breathtaking Easter Island. Nearly 2,500 miles west of Chile’s coast, it is one of the world’s most famous archeological sites bound to leave travelers amazed. Easter Island is a nature and culture lover’s dream getaway in the Pacific Ocean.

The mystical moai statues

One of the most isolated places on earth just got easier to travel to. The mystery of Easter Island and its indigenous inhabitants, the Rapa Nui, are intriguing to scientists and travelers alike. This triangular island is full of an extraordinary collection of archaeological wonders, including the iconic moai. These statutes form one of Rapa Nui’s most enduring images. These famous moai sculptures may be what first come to mind when picturing Easter Island, but the island has many other worthwhile attractions. On Easter Island you will be amazed by the 20,000 archeological sites, rich culture, two volcanoes, scuba diving, and white sand beaches.

You can now stand in the mysterious presence of Easter Island and be splashed by Iguazu Falls after a simple flight from the United States.

Be prepared to be dazzled, amazed, and tantalized! There is no better place to spend Carnival than in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s spectacularly located coastal capital. Carnival is a 4-day celebration that takes place in February or March of each year. Carnival is celebrated just before the beginning of Lent, a period of abstinence and self-evaluation that ends 40 days later on Easter.

Parading through Rio de Janeiro during Carnival.

Characterized by the enjoyment of all excesses one can imagine, Carnival is celebrated as a farewell to the bodily pleasures that are relinquished during Lent. This year, the carnival will start on Saturday March 5th and end on Fat Tuesday, March 8th.

Although almost every town and village throughout Brazil and other catholic countries in Latin America have their own festivities, Rio de Janeiro has long been considered the premier place to celebrate the sensual feast of Carnival.

Not only is the Rio celebration the biggest one in South America, it is also the reference for any carnival and one of the most fascinating events on the planet. Up to 500,000 foreign visitors make the trip each year to take part in the celebrations.

The Rio Carnival is a truly euphoric and cheerful event that sums up the Carioca culture and way of life, with dancing, singing and partying taking over the whole city and culminating in the famous Samba Parade. This world-famous parade features a display of dances and competition between Rio’s top samba schools.

The Parade has been held in the famous Sambadrome since 1984, a building especially constructed for this event as the parade was becoming too big for spontaneous gatherings. However, historically Carnival looked a little different.

The spectacular views of Rio from its most famous landmark.

The first records of carnival festivities date back to 1723 when Portuguese immigrants introduced the Entrudo. The Entrudo involved throwing water bombs, mud pies, and flour missiles at unsuspecting, and suspecting, neighbors. In the beginning of the 20th century, the Rio carnival became more organized with dance and costume competitions known as ranchos. These ranchos eventually morphed into the development of the world-famous samba schools that began in the late 1920s.

Millions of people attend the Rio Carnival so you have to plan your trip carefully and well in advance to make sure that you get the most out of this spectacular event, although the last minute traveler can occasionally find special offers. Flights and hotel prices tend to increase drastically at this time of year, and tickets for the shows and parade are sold months in advance.

Others events that should not be missed during the Carnival are the many costumed balls taking place all over town. You can easily purchase tickets for most of them and enjoy the parties without having to spend a fortune.

Last month we reported that Lonely Planet is publishing their famous top ten lists for the coming year. The company just published their Top Ten Best Value Destinations, and Best Places to Get Dance Fever lists and we were thrilled to see that more of our favorite destinations are making an appearance. Among the highlights are Argentina and Brazil.

Dancing the passionate tango through the streets of Buenos Aires.

Argentina came in at number seven for best value destinations in 2011, which is no surprise to us. Argentina pesos make the country an excellent deal for international travelers who can dine on delicious steaks and full-bodies red wines for a fraction of the cost they would pay in their home country. Unlike in the United States where a nice hotel costs upwards of a few hundred dollars per night, in Argentina chic accommodation doesn’t carry a hefty price tag. Take a look at our Argentina tours for great ideas about how to plan an Argentina vacation for less.

Famous for their passionate tango dances, emulated in most American movies, and by children and adults worldwide, the fact that Argentina came in second for the best place to get your groove on in the world, is less than shocking. And, of course, there is no better city to clasp a rose in your teeth and dance with your love than the vibrant city of Buenos Aires. On a Buenos Aires Tour through the city of tango you can explore the best of Argentina while learning the intricate steps of this romantic dance.

The charming streets of colorful Bahia, Brazil.

Just two spots down the list at number four, Bahia in Brazil also deserves honorable mention. If rhythmic dance circles, a festive atmosphere, and Afro-Brazilian culture sounds enticing to you, head to the colorful streets of Bahia where some of the finest and most energetic dancing in the world takes place in colonial plazas by moonlight. Created in Brazil by African slaves during the sixteenth century, Capoeira combines dance, music and martial arts. Characterized by broad, sweeping movements, playful sparring, and a whole lot of energy, this is far from your typical ballet and a must-see for travelers on a Salvador de Bahia tour.

For more information about visiting either of these two destinations on your next South America vacation, please contact one of our travel advisors who can help you customize your trip.
