The city of eternal spring lies at the heart of Bolivia , halfway between the tropical plains of the east and the high Altiplano. Economically the region around Cochabamba is of vital importance to the country; the Cochabamba valley one of the agricultural hearts of Bolivia. The tropical lowlands of the Chaparé to the east are the world's biggest producer of coca leaves, the raw material for cocaine. Despite the construction boom Cochabamba underwent in the last decades, the city center still retains much of its colonial character.

You can visit the most important archeological site in the Cochabamba area. The ruins are extensive, the main building is said to have been the largest roofed Inca building. The Incas built the fortress between 1463 and 1472, to protect the fertile agricultural area from attacks from local tribes.
