Why travel to Chiclayo & Trujillo

The regions of Chiclayo and Trujillo feature coastline, desert, and highlands. This area of the country is renowned for its long history of pre-Inca cultures, making it one of the most interesting archeological destinations in the country.

Mighty cultures such as the Moche, Sipan, Sican, and Chimu all reigned successively within this territory, and pyramids, tombs, and even entire cities remain as evidence of their advanced technologies.

Trujillo, known as the City of Eternal Spring due to its perpetual sunshine and festive atmosphere, is one of the most attractive northern cities in Peru and one which prides itself on its rich colonial past. Colonial influence is quite visible in the look and feel of the downtown area, particularly in the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Church of the Company of Jesus Christ, the monastery of El Carmen, and the many colonial-style houses.

Head just four hours north to take a tour of Chiclayo, a territory known as the cradle of the Moche civilization. Archeological sites and museums abound here, including the famous royal tombs of Sipán which were discovered in 1987. Next to the tombs travelers can visit the Sipán archaeological site, where the burial remains of an important Moche ruler were discovered.

What to do in Chiclayo & Trujillo

Among the Trujillo´s numerous archaeological attractions is Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the Americas and the ancient capital of the Chimu culture. This UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site is undoubtedly the most famous and impressive pre-Inca site in Trujillo for the sheer scale and novelty of its construction.

But equally charismatic and intriguing are the remarkable huacas (pre-Inca ceremonial centers) of the Sun and of the Moon, which each measure more than 65 feet in length and reveal vivid reliefs on various layers. Not to be missed is the El Brujo complex, an elaborately decorated huaca with inspiring figures of dancers and warriors.

The Huanchaco beach resort, just 15 minutes from the city, is famous for the caballitos de totora found propped against the sand when not in use. These lightweight boats made of totora reeds have been used to cut through the ocean’s waves since the time of the Moches and Chimus. Huanchaco is the perfect spot to bask in the sun while savoring one of the region´s many seafood delicacies.  Lambayeque, a nearby province of Chiclayo, boasts some of the best cuisine in the country.

In Chiclayo, the modern Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum is a must-see for its display of the extraordinary gold pieces found in the excavations. And not far from the center of Chiclayo await various other museums, including the Brunning Museum and ultra-contemporary Sicán Museum.

Of particular interest in Chiclayo is the exciting Chiclayo market, which is known as the Mercado Modelo. It is open daily and situated just five blocks from the Parque Principal (Plaza de Armas). Here you can find just about anything you can imagine, including the special products of local shamans and healers.

When to visit Chiclayo & Trujillo

Chiclayo and Trujillo are located in a coastal region characterized mainly by desert terrain, with plenty of tropical sunshine and pleasant ocean breezes. Its year-round pleasant climate has earned Trujillo the title of “Capital of Eternal Spring.” Early October may be a good time to visit; the International Spring Festival has taken place in Trujillo every year since 1950. Trujillo is also known for its wonderful beaches such as Delicias, Salaverry, Huanchaco, and Chicama, venues for international surfing competitions, making summer a good time to visit as well.
