The city of Puno houses numerous colonial era attractions, most notably the mestizo style Cathedral (blending Spanish baroque with Andean elements), constructed in the 17th century, and the Balcony of Count Lemus, which is on a house that has existed since the city was founded in 1668 and where Viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernandez de Castro once arrived in order to quell a violent settlers rebellion. The latter currently functions as a regional cultural complex and houses an art gallery.
While displaying attractive features such as those mentioned, the most breathtaking and cherished attraction in Puno is without a doubt Lake Titicaca and its idyllic islands. The splendor of this 5,318 square mile (8559 km²) cobalt colored lake reflecting an azure sky is sure to dazzle and awaken the senses.
The Uros, or Floating Islands, are approximately 40 man made islands constructed entirely of totora reeds by the island’s inhabitants. Between 3 and 10 families live on each island, and ingeniously utilize the reed for almost every aspect of their existence, including housing, fires for cooking, boats, and it even makes up a small part of their diet. The sheer innovation of such a people, coupled with their warm and welcoming attitude to visitors, makes the Uros an unforgettable experience that is not to be missed if in the area.
Another beautiful destination that beckons the curious traveler is Taquile Island. Vestiges of the island’s pre-Incan past are still observable here. Used as a political prison during the colonial times up until the 20th century, this island became exclusive property of its inhabitants around 1970. The amicability of the town-folk, who conserve their customs, traditions and clothing proudly, are what characterize this quaint island village. The intricate and brightly colored textiles prolifically produced here reflect the inhabitants’ Andean beliefs, myths, and way of life.

Our local guides are considered experts on the history and living cultures present and take great pleasure in accompanying you on your voyage of discovery into this mythical region.
Visiting Lake Titicaca and staying on Amantani Island was a very surreal experience that I highly recommend.
Patria Cabral, Seattle, WA, USA
The Lake Titikaka tour was culturally and scenically eye-opening. And the guide was very pleasant.
Irene Chen, Sunnyvale, CA, USA
Alexander, our guide from Puno, was also superb. He took us to an Uros Island further from Puno, so there were no other tours there. We really appreciated that Alexander knew how to bring us away from touristy places and closer to the people.
Verena & Bill, Ottawa, Canada
Lastly, in Puno for Lake Titicaca, we had George as our tour guide. He helped us with things he wasn't obligated to do and that really made us feel better. He also did a wonderful job touring.

#6: DISCOVER PERUOnce known as the ‘City of Silver’ – a reference to the multitude of silver mines that were once the most abundant in all South America – the high Andean town of Puno has a dense and varied history, made richer by the many waves of conquering cultures that has swept through the region for centuries. Nowadays it is proudly referred to as the Folkloric Capital of Peru, due to its wealth of artistic and cultural expressions, such as handicrafts, costumes, holidays, legends and, most importantly, more than 300 ethnic dances.
At a dramatically high altitude of 12,397 ft / 3,809 meters, Puno claims fame to the highest navigable lake in the world, the gorgeous Lake Titicaca. Ancient legend has it that from these shimmering blue depths emerged the first children of the Sun, Manco Capac, and his wife, Mama Ocllo, founders of the mighty Tihuantinsuyo Empire.
Today, ancestors of these mythical figures still populate the land in much the same way they have done for centuries, living off the land and nutritious fresh water trout that abound in the lake’s waters. Having inherited their forefathers’ mastery of architecture, stonework, ceramics, and textiles, there is no shortage of local treasures for a culture loving traveler to discover.
Accompanying you on this trip of a lifetime, Peru For Less offers the very best in guided tours, excursions and hotel accommodations, suited for all travel requirements and catering for every budget.
A breath-taking journey to this region steeped in legend is made easy with Peru For Less. We are proud to offer everything you need to build magical memories that will last forever.
* The Aymara culture is the most predominant in the region, in both ancestry and indigenous language, and spans the entire altiplano (high plateau) including southeastern Peru and Bolivia.
* Lake Titicaca is bilaterally owned by Peru and Bolivia. The area corresponding to Peru is 2,965 square miles (4.772 km²), while the area corresponding to Bolivia is 2,355 square miles (3.790 km²).
* A journey by sail boat from one end to the other takes about 7 days.
* Oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau spent eight weeks using mini submarines to explore the depths of the Lake Titicaca and discovered a 60-centimeter (24-inches) long, tri-colored frog that apparently never surfaces, much to the amazement of the scientific community.
* Unlike the rest of the Andean region, it is in fact the men and boys who weave the fabulous textiles on Taquile Island, not the women.
