Surfing to Peace

After a 43-year absence, world championship surfing has returned to Peru. On Saturday March 30th, the renowned Kon-Tiki Surf Club in Punta Hermosa welcomed ISA president at a gathering of Peruvian surfing legends. The following morning they held the “Sands of the World” ceremony in Redondo Beach, Lima. The countries represented included Australia, Italy and The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Together, 17 nations symbolically poured sand from their native beaches into a single vase to express their unity as well as the ISA's dream of world peace through surfing.

To add to the monumental excitement, ISA president, Fernando Aguerre, christened Miraflores as the official birthplace of Latin American surfing. The opening ceremony commemorated Eduardo Arena, a Peruvian surfing legend after whom this year’s championship trophy is named and also the founder and president of the International Surfing Federation that gave way to the ISA.

The finale of the ceremony included a demonstration of the Tortora Horse, a traditional Peruvian surfing craft used more than three thousand years ago by the ancient inhabitants of the northern Peruvian coast.

Overall, it was an exciting week for Peruvian sports as Peru got its first taste of the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship in over 40 years. Fernando Aguerre proclaimed, “This prestigious tournament is giving Peruvian people a lot to be happy about. They've been waiting 43 years for the return of a World Championship rated event.”
