Monkey flies from Peru to New York

On August 7th, a man flying from Peru to New York, with a stopover in Florida, smuggled a baby marmoset monkey under his hat. Passengers on Spirit Airlines Flight 180 from Fort Lauderdale to La Guardia noticed the monkey when it jumped out under the smuggler’s hat to play with his pony tail. Surprised and in disbelief, the passengers asked the man if he knew he had a monkey on him and alerted the crew. The monkey then spent the rest of the journey on the seat beside the man. The passengers said that the monkey, to their amazement, was incredibly well behaved and quiet. It’s reported he ordered the vegetarian meal (joke, haha).

The Spirit Airlines crew alerted authorities at La Guardia Airport, where the man was questioned upon landing. The city’s animal control agency said the monkey appeared to be in good health. However, Center for Disease Control and Prevention took the baby marmoset into a 31 day quarantine to check for signs of disease. Unfortunately for the would-be owner, the monkey is expected to end up in a zoo.

Officials can’t understand how the man and the monkey made it so far without being detected. They are amazed at how gracefully they passed through Peruvian Customs, US customs, and a several hour layover in Fort Lauderdale. If it wasn’t for the monkey’s playful antics and curiosity, the two would have probably reached their destination unnoticed. It is still unclear whether the unnamed man will face any criminal charges.
