Ray and Bob,Peruvian woman just misses out on surfing glory
Former World Champion, Sofia Mulanovich, came second in the recent ASP Women’s World Tour surfing tournament finals in Hawaii, narrowly losing out to Stephanie Gilmore of Australia. She remains second in the ASP’s world rankings, behind the Australian, but has vowed to go one step further next year by claiming the world title.
While repeated failures at soccer stadiums dishearten the crowds time and time again, Sofia has proven to be an inspiring success and a source of pride for all Peruvians: in 2004 she became the first South American woman to be a surfing world champion and this year she was the first South American, male or female, to be inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame!

The 24-year-old Mulanovich, a Peruvian of Croatian descent, grew up in the popular beach resort of Punta Hermosa in Lima province, which is where she first learnt to surf. She was also naturally blessed by growing up in a country with 2,414km (1,500 miles) of coastline, affording some of the best surfing in the world, including the world’s longest wave – a whopping 4km (2.5 miles) at Chicama, north of Trujillo!
