Ben,Potato project wins World Challenge 2007 out of nearly 1,000 participants!
There’s a paradoxical quality to the thought that a region blessed with the greatest variety of potatoes in the world (over 3,000) is also home to the poorest farmers in Peru. This situation, however, could be about to change now that T’ikapapa, a project designed to promote the local potato industry, has just won the World Challenge 2007 - an annual competition promoting the initiative for businessmen to open themselves and their products to the international markets.
T’ikapapa was a project designed to bridge the gap between the Andean farmers and the world market, promoting their staggering variety of premium goods. The project’s ‘participatory market chain approach’ is now being applied to potato chips and other value-added products. Over 200 families participating in this project will be receiving a US$20,000 grant for funding, opening new horizons and opportunities for them and their region.

The three companies were presented with their prizes at a special awards ceremony in The Hague on Tuesday 4 December. The World Challenge 2007 Awards ceremony was shown on BBC World on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December. It was a memorable event and an inspiring accomplishment for Peruvians.
