Shirley Fung and Anil SharmaFirewater ... and How to Enjoy it!
The tangy, sweet and undeniably intoxicating Peruvian cocktail, the Pisco Sour, was celebrated this month on Feb.2, National Pisco Sour Day. This concoction of pisco, lemon juice, egg white and sugar syrup whipped and served with a dash of Angostura bitters has a long history beginning with the arrival of Spaniards to the New World.

Legend has it that when the Spaniards arrived, they brought grapes for wine making but a serendipitous error in the wine-making process resulted in a smooth yet strong version of brandy which came to become Peru’s national drink. The fertile soil and dry sunny climate of the Ica valley make it ideal for growing grapes key to the production of Pisco and wine. If you’re interested in visiting Ica, an oasis town where grapes irrigated by the Ica River flourish, take a look at our Ica/Nazca Tour (3 days/2nights). Until then, Salud!
