So, we will be discussing a couple of the highlights of the coastal calendar, the Marinera dance festival in Trujillo and Lima’s anniversary celebrations. Finally, we examine Peru’s fledgling steps in the world of international cricket, traditionally a sport played in the summer.

The 18th of January marked 473rd Anniversary of Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, founding his capital in the conquered land of the Incas, preferring a coastal capital, with sea connections, rather than an Andean one as the Incas had had in Cuzco. Legend has it that Pizarro marked out the Plaza de Armas, the main square, with his sword.

cricketPeru dips its toe into world of international cricket

When one thinks of South American sport, images of soccer immediately spring to mind. Think a bit harder and one might envisage surfers or polo players. It is unlikely that cricket, that most ‘English’ of games, would have registered. Nonetheless, the game has an honorable tradition here in Peru, and has recently been making waves – well, ripples – on the international scene.
