Travel Tips: Airplane Skincare

Air travel is the preferred method among those who want to travel to Latin America. However, an airplane flight can be tough for travelers with sensitive and dry skin. Latin America for Less would like to share some tips on taking care of your skin while flying.

There are several theories used to explain why such irritation occurs. It is commonly believed that the practice of keeping in-flight humidity levels at or below 4 percent in order to battle corrosion is the reason for skin dryness. However, a study in Environmental Science and Technology suggests that skin irritation from airplane travel is caused from skin-oils interacting with the ozone. Luckily numerous travelers have experienced that if following the tips below, their skin can endure a flight with less complications.

1. Do not wear make-up for your flight
Make-up only increases the drying of skin while traveling. As an alternative, it is advised to apply a tinted moisturizer. If you feel dry later on, apply more moisturizer. However, remember that when taking creams, liquids or gels they must be less than three ounces and inside a zip-lock bag.

2. Hydrate during your flight
If you drink water, you will also hydrate your skin. While most airlines serve beverages during the flight, it might be useful to buy a water bottle after passing the security gates. Having a bottle encourages you to drink plenty throughout your flight.

3. Bring some body moisturizer
Apply moisturizer to sensitive areas of your body during the flight. Take into consideration the potential allergies of other passengers and pack a moisturizer without a scent. As with your face moisturizer, remember to put this moisturizer in a container of three ounces or less. Also be sure to put it in a zip-lock bag.

4. Bring a hydrating mist for in-flight treatment.
A hydrating mist can provide instant relief for dry and itchy faces. Just spray the mist on to the affected areas. This can also be a great way to cool yourself down if you feel hot on airplanes. Once again, don’t forget to find a 3 ounce or smaller mist for your flight.

5. Avoid Drinking Alcohol
Consuming alcohol will dry your skin further. While many drink to relax due to nerves from flying, it is better for your skin if you find a better way to distract yourself during the flight. If you feel you cannot pass up the opportunity to indulge in airline alcohol, drink plenty of water afterwards.
