Illegal feline and monkey skulls seized at Lima airport
Peruvian Customs agents routinely seize items ranging from contraband to cocaine. However, they were surprised when they found something a little out of the ordinary at a warehouse in Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport. Officials found 11 feline and monkey skulls inside a package headed to Miami, Florida.
In addition to the craniums, customs agents also found 32 dissected rare butterflies, jaguar and snake skins, parrot beaks, and turtle shells, among others items. All of the objects were headed to Miami.
Officials believe that an international smuggling ring that specializes in shipping rare wildlife articles is responsible. Shipping any type of wildlife fauna or their remnants is strictly prohibited by Peruvian law and is punishable by fines and imprisonment.
