Exports of Peruvian Surf Boards Increase Substantially

ADEX, Peru’s Association of Exporters, has said that the quality of Peruvian surf boards has caught the attention of many international surf shops. They report that board exports have increased an incredible 43% during the first quarter of the year. Japan was the top importer of Peruvian boards, followed by Puerto Rico and Spain. Still, the industry remains relatively small compared to the traditional powerhouses of the US and Australia. The good news is that the quality of the materials and craft is there and there is much more room for growth.

The sport of surfing has been around in Peru for a long time. There are even Mochican ceramics from pre-Inca times showing men riding waves on wooden planks along the northern coasts of Peru. Today, the Peruvian surfing scene is changing with the recent successes of Peruvian surfers. In 2004, Sofia Mulanovich won the female surfing world title. Anali Gomez also became the Latin American female surfing champion, as well as making second place in the 2007 world championships. Other Peruvian surfers have also won South American and Pan-American championships, such as Matias Mulanovich, Javier Swayne, Manuel Roncalla, Gabriel Villaran, and Sebastian Alarcon. It is not surprising that the sport is gaining more and more Peruvian followers everyday.
