crater caused by the crashMystery illness strikes after fiery crash from space near Peruvian village

A fireball fell from the sky and crashed nearby the town of Carancas in Puno, Peru on September 15. Soon after the crash, villagers that went to the site reported headaches and vomiting. Authorities think the illnesses may be caused by radiation. Local scientists report the falling object was a chondrite meteorite, while Russian authorities state it was a U.S. spy satellite. +more

Destruction of the rainforestPeru’s Land Management policies help slow down destruction of the rainforest

Scientists analyzed 7 years of high-resolution satellite data covering almost 80% of the Peruvian Amazon and concluded that land-use policies which designated specific areas for logging and protected areas for conservation helped keep rainforest degradation under control from 1999 to 2005. +more
