The five Menkes from Maryland,Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich chosen as best in the world and inducted into Surfer’s Hall of Fame
Sofia Mulanovich was named best female surfer of 2007 by “Surfing Magazine”. The ceremony was held this past Tuesday in The Glove Theatre Anaheim, California. It’s the 3rd consecutive time Sofia receives this distinction, which is determined by surfing experts as well as the general public which votes online. “I want to thank the magazine for this prize and dedicate this victory to the people of Peru that have suffered a lot and lost family members and their homes due to the earthquake last month,” said Sofia. Kelly Slater, 7 time world champion, received the honor in the men’s category.

The distinction came only one week after winning the Rip Curl Girls Pro in Santander, Spain. With that victory she rose to 3rd place in the world rankings, strengthening her chances of coming out number one in the world, which she did in 2004.

Last, but certainly not least, Sofia was inducted into The Surfers’ Hall of Fame this year during its 10th anniversary in Huntington Beach, California. The other inductees were Al Merrick, Bruce Irons and Martin Potter. Huntington Surf and Sport store owner Aaron Pai stated that the inductees were chosen because they have had a major impact on the world of surf, having revolutionized the sport and influenced millions of surfers across the globe. Sofia is the first ever South American to have been granted this huge honor. “I’m happy, it's incredible, all of my heroes are here. It feels terrific, the best surfers in the world, all the legends, I'm the first South American and it's an honor to be there,” she said.

Sofia Mulanovich was born on June 24, 1983 in Punta Hermosa, Lima, Peru. In 2004, she was the first Peruvian surfer ever to win an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT). She became the first South American (man or woman) to ever win the World Title. She has also won the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, U.S. Open of Surfing and the Surfer Poll (2004 and 2005).
