Cultural Awareness 101

It is always a good idea to be conscience of cultural differences when travelling in any country. This month we have compiled a list of pointers that are specifically related to South America travel.

For example, punctuality in many Latin American countries is not a high priority. Therefore, tours, guides and other locals might run late. The lack of punctuality is not regarded as a lack of respect for the traveler; it is just part of the cultural setting that does not regard time as something of high importance.

Dinner time in South America is known for being fairly late, in comparison to North America. Hence, it is easy to see locals going out to dinner at around 8pm, which in turn makes after-dinner outings later as well. So do not expect clubs to be full at 10pm, which is around the time locals would be finishing dinner.

When in South America, keep in mind that larger towns and cities are most likely to accept credit cards and sometimes traveler’s checks. But if visiting smaller towns and villages, cash (in small denominations) should be kept at hand.

Travel tips

Personal space in Latin America is less important than that in North America and some European countries. Thus, travelers should be aware that strangers can touch them, say on the arm or shoulder, kiss them hello, and not be aware of their cultures’ conception of personal space.

As a visitor, always ask permission before taking photographs, especially in small towns or when doing portraits. Being a diverse multicultural continent, many different locals do not appreciate photographs and might feel taken advantage of. In order to avoid trouble or misunderstandings, be sure to notify (to the best of your ability) that you are going to take a photograph.

When arriving to any country, travelers can be targeted since they are most likely to have all of their valuables with them. Arrange for airport pickup with your hotel or take only airport trusted taxis, so that your arrival can be as safe and worry-free as possible!
