On a protected area of 5 million acres, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve hosts an extraordinary number of species that thrive on land, in the water, and up in the sky. In winter, when the river is high, visitors can explore small islets and winding river systems in the reserve’s flooded forest. In summer, the river recedes and beautiful sandy beaches form on the banks. Only about 30,000 people live in this vast tract of land. An Amazon river cruise gives visitors a chance to interact with native communities and to learn about the conservation and sustainability projects that keep this vast reserve intact.
Aboard the luxurious Aqua river boat, you will sail on the Amazon River’s two largest tributaries: the Ucayali and the Marañon, as well as on the mighty Amazon itself. You are embarking on a spectacular adventure, to a place previously limited to the world’s most experienced and intrepid travelers.
The M/V Aqua luxury riverboat is a 24-passenger vessel offering comfortable and spacious suites with private bathrooms, an observation lounge, and a scenic, air conditioned dining room. A bar, lounge, and boutique gift shop are also onboard.

Day 1 : Arrival to Iquitos & Cruise Launch

- Upon arrival to Iquitos, you will be met at the airport and taken to the main dock where you will board the M/V Aqua. As you settle into your comfortable suite, your vessel will begin its journey toward the Yanayacu River, deep into the heart of the Amazon.
- You will receive an orientation and security briefing from the boat’s staff and naturalist guide before enjoying your first delicious dinner aboard the ship.
- Enjoy the evening at your leisure, relaxing on the boat deck and taking in your beautiful surroundings.
Day 2 : Cruise the Amazon and Tahuayo Rivers & Charo Lake

- Rise at dawn for an early morning skiff excursion to see the sun rise over the Amazon. You will then return to the boat to enjoy a filling breakfast before setting off on your first land expedition into the jungle. Riding aboard a comfortable skiff, you’ll explore the splendid black waters of the Tahuayo River. Keep an eye out for the amazing wildlife that lives in the rainforest. You may catch glimpse of terns, orioles, blackbirds, black collared hawks, and monkeys. You will then reach Charo Lake where you will have the opportunity to go on a fishing trip.
- After lunch back aboard the M/V Aqua, you will enjoy an afternoon excursion to the Yacapana Islands. These islets are known as the “Iguana Islands” for the massive iguana population crawling on the ground and resting on tree tops. As the sun sets, you may be lucky enough to spot the extraordinary Pink River Dolphin.
- In the evening you will return to your vessel to enjoy a delicious dinner and relaxing night as you continue your journey upstream, where the Ucayali, Marañon, and Amazon Rivers merge.
Day 3 : Cruise the Maranon River & Pacaya Samaria National Reserve

- Begin the day with an early breakfast before setting off on a jungle expedition with your expert naturalist guide. You will learn about sustainable resource management projects in the Amazon and walk along various trails. During your hike, your guide will point out the exotic wildlife that populates the rainforest, including the famous Kapok trees, the tallest in the Amazon basin.
- You will return to the M/V Aqua to enjoy lunch and a break for rest before beginning another exciting excursion. In the late afternoon, you will once again board the skiff for a monkey, dolphin, and caiman-spotting expedition. You are likely to see howler and capuchin monkeys, the squirrel-sized monkeys called tamarins, as well as a vast variety of birds.
- As the sun sets, keep on the lookout for caimans, tree boas, tarantulas, and frogs. You will then rejoin your vessel and start sailing downstream on the Marañon River, back toward the headwaters of the Amazon. Enjoy dinner and a quiet evening aboard the M/V Aqua.
Day 4 : Cruise Amazon River to Puerto Miguel & Disembark in Iquitos

- Wake up early and hop on a skiff to sail along the Ucayali River to the Yucuruche Lake, where you will walk along a jungle trail to see the world’s largest aquatic plant, the giant water lily or “Victoria Amazonica”.
- You will then return to your boat for breakfast before setting off on another jungle expedition to the birthplace of the Amazon. Your vessel will sail along the edges of the sumptuous Pacaya Samiria Reserve and its flooded forest. You will reach the point where the Amazon’s two major tributaries merge, forming the world’s largest waterway, and continue on to the Puerto Prado village to meet native Cocama Indians.
- After a final lunch back on the M/V Aqua, you will disembark in Iquitos and visit the Manatee Rescue Center, a project aimed at protecting endangered manatees. You will receive a presentation from expert biologists and learn how they care for this species and prepare them for re-introduction to their natural habitat.
- After the visit, you will be taken to the airport for your journey home or on to your next destination. Browse our full range of Peru travel destinations and explore additional options for your vacation.
