Iquitos, the capital of the Loreto region in Peru’s northern Amazon, is the main port city on the Amazon River. It's also the largest jungle settlement in the world only accessible by air or boat. As such, Iquitos will be the starting point for your mystical journey into the Amazon.
On this expedition, you will travel to two different Amazon lodges. You’ll first stop at the Explorama Lodge, then continue deeper in the jungle to the Explornapo Lodge. Through river tours and trail hikes, you will discover the enormity and sheer beauty of this ecological paradise.
The Explorama Lodge is located deep in the jungle in a private reserve. Illuminated at night by torches and lamps the palm-thatched houses with their 55 guestrooms provide for a romantic setting in the heart of the Amazon.

Day 1 : Arrival to Iquitos & Transfer to Explorama

- You will be met at the airport by a Peru For Less representative, who will transfer you to the Explorama dock. You will board a motor-boat for the 50-mile journey down the river to the Explorama Lodge.
- Once you are settled in and rested, you’ll set off for your first jungle tour. Accompanied by your English-speaking naturalist guide, you’ll go on a hike along the “Lake Trail” through lowland rainforest. During the high water season, when this land is flooded, the excursion is done by boat.
- After dinner back at the lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a night walk or open boat ride to observe nocturnal nightlife in the jungle.
Day 2 : Transfer to Explornapo Lodge & Jungle Expedition

- After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll take a boat ride down the Amazon River then up the Napo River until you reach the second lodge where you’ll spend the night, Explornapo Lodge.
- In the afternoon, you’ll visit the ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden, located right next to the lodge and tended by a local shaman. Here you’ll learn about the jungle’s medicinal plants and many more.
- In the evening, after dinner back at the lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a night boat excursion along the Sucusari stream in search of caimans and other nocturnal wildlife. You’ll be able to soak up the jungle night sounds under the beautifully starlit sky.
Day 3 : Hike to the Canopy Walkway

- After breakfast, you’ll set off on a hike to the Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge spanning over 0.4 miles (500 m) connected by tree platforms and reaching a height of over 115 feet (53 m). This is the perfect lookout to observe the jungle’s many exotic bird species.
- In the afternoon, you’ll take a boat trip along one of the many Napo tributaries, spotting birds and other wildlife along the way. You’ll also get the chance to stop for a try at river fishing and a swim.
Day 4 : Oxbow Lake Tour & Return to Explorama Lodge

- In the morning, you’ll head out on a boat excursion to a black water oxbow lake that is formed when water from the Napo River separates from the main flow of the river. These magnificent lakes are often covered with giant water lilies, known as Victoria Regia. You might even catch a glimpse of the superb and elusive Hoatzin bird that lives in the area.
- In the afternoon, you’ll take the boat for the journey back to the Explorama Lodge where you’ll spend your last night in the Amazon. On the way you’ll pass by the Francisco de Orellana town, where you can see a statue of the first European explorer to reach the Amazon River in 1542.
Day 5 : Oxbow Lake Tour & Return to Explorama Lodge

- In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a walk along the local river trail. On the way, you’ll stop to visit the “ribereños”, or river people and a local sugar cane rum factory.
- After your tour, you’ll be taken to the airport for your journey home or to your next destination. Browse our full range of Peru travel destinations and explore additional options for your vacation.

Explornapo Lodge
One of the most pared down accommodation options in the Explorama Lodge collection, this lodge focuses principally on close contact with nature and the true ‘Amazon experience’. Deep inside the heart of the rainforest and over 100 miles (160 km) from the bustling city of Iquitos, it lies on the banks of the Napo River, and at the entrance to the lodge’s own protected area - the Sucusari Reserve. It is also Explorama Lodge collection’s closest access point to their famed hanging bridge walkway tour, suspended 115 ft (35 meters) above the ground.
Explornapo Lodge is ideal for the more adventurous traveler who prefers simplistic living and proximity to untarnished nature over the more developed options.
