Iquitos is one of Peru’s most interesting cities, at once geographically isolated and economically vital. At the turn of the 20th century, access to the Amazon’s natural resources brought enormous wealth to this port city. Through subsequent decades, fortunes rose and fell in cycles of boom and bust. Iquitos in the 21st century has become a gateway of a different kind, providing entry to one of the most wildlife-rich areas on the planet.
The enviable location of Iquitos directly on the banks of the Amazon River is counterbalanced by difficulty of access. No roads connect Iquitos to the rest of Peru and the only way to get to this large jungle settlement is by air or boat. Iquitos is nonetheless a popular starting point for Peru Amazon tours.
On this expedition, you will travel to two different Amazon lodges, Explorama and Explornapo. Both lodges are located on protected natural reserves, providing travelers with a rare opportunity to become immersed in the Peru jungle. On this Amazon tour, excursions into the rainforest are complemented by well-earned hammock relaxation on the decks of thatched-roof cabanas. There is no better way to experience the heart of the Amazon.

Day 1 : Arrival to Iquitos & Transfer to Explorama

- Upon arrival to Iquitos, you will be met at the airport by a Peru For Less representative, who will transfer you to the Explorama’s dock. You’ll board a motor-boat for the 50-mile journey down the river to your first destination, the Explorama Lodge.
- Once you’ve had a chance to rest, you’ll set off on your first jungle tour in the company of English-speaking naturalist guide. You’ll follow the “Lake Trail” through lowland rainforest, spotted with exotic flora and fauna. The excursion is by boat during the high water season when the land becomes flooded.
- After dinner, you’ll have an opportunity for more adventure with a night walk or boat ride to observe nocturnal wildlife in the jungle.
Day 2 : Transfer to Explornapo Lodge & Jungle Expedition

- After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll take a boat ride down the Amazon River then up the Napo River until you reach Explornapo Lodge.
- In the afternoon, you’ll visit the ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden, located right next to the lodge and tended by a local shaman. Here you’ll learn about medicinal plants and more.
- In the evening, after dinner back at the lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a night boat excursion along the Sucusari stream in search of caimans and other nocturnal wildlife. Soak up the jungle night sounds under the starlit sky.
Day 3 : Hike to the Canopy Walkway

- Enjoy breakfast and then hike to the Canopy Walkway, a suspension bridge spanning nearly half a mile (500 m), connected by tree platforms, and reaching a height of over 115 feet (53 m). This is the perfect observation point to spot the jungle’s many exotic bird species.
- In the afternoon, you’ll take a boat trip along one of the many Napo tributaries, spotting birds and other wildlife along the way. You’ll also get the chance to try your hand at river fishing and go for a swim.
Day 4 : Oxbow Lake Tour & Return to Explorama Lodge

- In the morning, head out on a boat excursion to a black water oxbow lake that is formed by off-flow from the Napo River. These magnificent lakes are often covered with giant water lilies, known as Victoria Regia. You might even catch a glimpse of the superb and elusive Hoatzin bird that lives in the area.
- In the afternoon, take the boat for the journey back to the Explorama Lodge where you’ll spend your last night in the Amazon. You’ll pass by the town of Francisco de Orellana, where you can see a statue of the first European explorer to reach the Amazon River in 1542.
Day 5 : River Walk & Departure from Iquitos

- In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a walk along the local river trail. The walk includes stops at a community of “ribereños” (riverbank residents) and at a local sugar cane rum factory.
- After your tour, you’ll be taken to the Iquitos airport for your journey home or to your next destination. Explore additional options for your trip to Peru by browsing our full range of exciting Peru travel destinations.

Explornapo Lodge
One of the most pared down accommodation options in the Explorama Lodge collection, this lodge focuses principally on close contact with nature to provide a true ‘Amazon experience.’ Deep inside the heart of the rainforest and over 100 miles (160 km) from the bustling city of Iquitos, it lies on the banks of the Napo River and at the entrance to the lodge’s private protected area, the Sucusari Reserve. It is also the closest access point to the famed hanging bridge walkway tour, suspended 115 ft (35 meters) above the ground. Explornapo Lodge is ideal for the more adventurous traveler who prefers simplistic living and proximity to untarnished nature.
