Sample the richness and diversity of Peru’s Amazon with a tour to Iquitos. This jungle settlement is located on the banks of the Amazon River in the Loreto Province and can only be accessed via boat or plane. Getting here is the exciting first step of your Amazon tour adventure.
Iquitos provides a gateway to one of the most biodiverse regions in Peru. Here, scientists work endlessly to catalogue the many critters around them, to account for the mindboggling variety of plants that grow on every surface, and to identify the trills, chirps, and twitters that sound at all hours of the day. In a close encounter with an ecological paradise, you’ll walk jungle trails and tour the river by boat, becoming immersed in a world like no other.
The Explorama River Lodge is located on a private reserve deep in the jungle. Illuminated by torches and lamps at night, palm-thatched houses provide a romantic setting in the heart of the Amazon. Walkways connect the various buildings, from the sleeping quarters to the Tahuampa bar, dining room, sun porch and hammock house, where guests can relax after long days exploring the jungle.

Day 1 : Arrival to Iquitos & Transfer to Explorama
- You will be met at the airport by a Peru For Less representative for a transfer to the Explorama dock. Riding aboard a motor-boat, you’ll embark on a 50-mile journey down the river to the Explorama Lodge.
- Settle into your room, take in your surroundings, and then set off on your first jungle tour. Accompanied by an English-speaking naturalist guide, you’ll hike along the “Lake Trail” through lowland rainforest. During the high water season, the land becomes flooded and the excursion is done by boat.
- After dinner back at the lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a night walk or boat ride to observe nocturnal nightlife in the jungle.
Day 2 : Bushmaster Trail Tour
- Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the lodge and then set off on a morning hike along the “Bushmaster Trail,” where a scientific study by the Missouri Botanical Garden has found the world’s highest diversity of trees.
- With your expert guide, you’ll be able to spot many exotic species, medicinal plants and other wildlife.
- After lunch back at the lodge, you’ll enjoy an afternoon boat trip along the Amazon River in search of the two species of freshwater dolphin species found in the river, the grey and pink dolphins. If conditions permit, you might be able to take a refreshing afternoon swim.
- In the evening, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening.
Day 3 : River Walk & Departure from Iquitos
- In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a walk along the local river trail. On the way, you’ll stop to visit “ribereños”, locals that live on the riverbanks, as well as a local sugar cane rum factory.

Explorama River Lodge
An easy 50 miles from the bustling city of Iquitos, Explorama River Lodge is located on an extensive private reserve of primary forest. The sole focus of this simple lodge is to provide guests with authentic yet comfortable accommodations for a Peru Amazon vacation.
