Uyuni Salt Flats & Lagoons – 4D3N
During this 4-day tour, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the most unique places on Earth. The salt flats of Bolivia and the surrounding desert regions are characterized by volcanic and geothermal activity. The area is literally empty and there are neither real villages nor luxury hotels. However, the overwhelming beauty of the landscape definitively compensates for the lack of comfort.
Note: Be aware that accommodation on this tour is rather basic.
Itinerary
Day 1: Begin Uyuni Tour
- You'll begin your Uyuni Salt Flat tour by visiting the Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes), an odd collection of rusting trains not far from Uyuni town, as well as the Colchani Village where you’ll see a domestic salt processing plant.
- You'll then visit the "Palacio de Sal & Spa Hotel," considered one of the most unique hotels in the world because it is constructed entirely of salt blocks.
- You will enjoy lunch at Incahuasi Island (also called Fish Island), an extraordinary island with huge cacti and a large population of viscachas (South American rabbit).
- After lunch you’ll visit the Coquesa Mummies, which date back to 1,000 AD, before continuing on to Tahua where you will spend the night at Tayka de Sal hotel.
Day 2: Galaxy Cave
- After breakfast at your hotel you will journey to the small town of Mala Mala to visit the Awakisa Museum and Galaxy Cave with its stunning formations.
- After lunch you’ll drive through the salt flats to San Pedro de Quemez where you’ll visit the nearby ghost town of Pueblo Quemado. The town was destroyed in 1879 during the Pacific War between Bolivia and Chile.
- You’ll spend the night at Tayka de Piedra hotel and have the evening to relax.
Day 3: Route of Jewels
- After breakfast at your hotel you will enjoy a spectacular drive across the Chiguana Salt Flat. You will see two massive volcanoes, the active Ollague and the extinct Tomasamil.
- You'll then arrive at several colorful lagoons, called the "Route of Jewels," and hopefully see the famous local flamingos which feed on the algae that give the lagoons their brilliant blue, green, and red colors. You will have lunch at Cañapa Lagoon before visiting the Hedionda, Chiarcota, Honda, and Ramaditas lagoons.
- You’ll continue your journey with a drive through the Siloli Desert to the Tayka del Desierto hotel, where you will spend the night.
Day 4: Laguna Colorada
- After breakfast at your hotel you’ll continue to drive through the surreal Siloli Desert, stopping to visit the Arbol de Piedra, an isolated rock formation in the shape of a tree that projects out of the desert sand.
- Next you’ll enjoy one of the strangest sights in area, the red-colored Laguna Colorada (also called the Red Lagoon). This a great place to see numerous types of flamingos, including Chilean, Andean, and James flamingos.
- The spectacle continues when you visit Sol de Mañana, a geothermal field that includes a 165-foot-high steam geyser surrounded by boiling mud-holes. After visiting the geyser, you’ll continue to thermal waters at the edge of Laguna Chalviri where, if desired, you can bath in the natural hot springs.
- After a relaxing bath in the surreal ambiance of the altiplano, you’ll continue through the barren landscape of the Pampa de Chalviri and via a pass at 16,000 feet above sea level (5,000 meters).
