Peru is a treasure-trove of archeological riches. Many of Peru’s ancient discoveries - such as the Royal Tombs of Sipán, the tattooed Lady of Cao mummy, and World Wonder Machu Picchu - have several times graced the cover of the prestigious National Geographic magazine. This Director’s Pick Peru package takes you to all these sites and more.
The earliest evidence of human settlement in Peru and in South America dates back to 12,000 BC. Many archeologists compare Peru’s ancient sites and treasures to those of Mexico, the Mediterranean, and Egypt. The pre-Columbian cultures had no written records but they did leave behind a plethora of artifacts, gigantic adobe cities and pyramids, stone citadels, extensive systems of transportation, and mysterious systems of communication that researchers are still deciphering.
This Archeological adventure vacation will take you to Peru’s most historically important sites. Begin in Lima and a stop at the famous Larco Museum and then continue to the northern coast of Peru, host to significant pre-Columbian findings. You will visit the well-preserved, treasure-filled tomb of the Lord of Sipán, as well as the Chimu city of Chan Chan (said to be the largest adobe city in the world). Your tour will end in the magical Sacred Valley of the Incas and the iconic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

Day 1 : Arrival to Lima

- You will be picked up at the airport by a Peru For Less representative and taken to your confirmed Lima hotel.
- You’ll have the remainder of the day to rest and start exploring Lima on your own. Read our Lima travel guide for ideas on what to see and do in this vibrant city.
Day 2 : Lima Tour - City & Museum

- Today you’ll enjoy a fascinating private Lima city and museum tour. After breakfast at your hotel, your English-speaking guide will take you to Lima’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will admire the Plaza Mayor (the central square) and the buildings that surround it, including the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Palace of Lima. You’ll then travel a few blocks to the San Francisco Monastery, famous for its catacombs where over 250,000 bones rest.
- Later you will visit one of Peru’s finest museums, the Larco Museum. Located in the cultural and historical district of Pueblo Libre, the museum boasts the world’s largest collection of gold and silver items from ancient Peru. It also holds a famous collection of erotic artifacts from the Moche civilization, including masterpieces of Pre-Columbian art that have been showcased around the world.
- After the tour, you’ll return to your hotel in Lima and have the remainder of the day to spend at your leisure.
Day 3 : Arrival to Trujillo & Sun and Moon Temple Tour

- After breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your transfer to the airport for your flight to Trujillo. Upon arrival, a Peru For Less representative will meet you and take you to your confirmed Trujillo hotel.
- You will start your adventure with a private guided Trujillo city tour to see all the main colonial, governmental, and religious sites in this beautiful city.
- After lunch, you will tour the colorful Moche Temples of the Sun & Moon, located right outside of the city.
- Spend the evening relaxing at your hotel in Trujillo and exploring the city at your leisure.
Day 4 : Chan Chan Tour & Visit to Huanchaco and El Brujo

- In the morning you will be taken to the bus station for the journey to another remarkable archeological site: the ancient adobe city of Chan Chan. This is the largest adobe city in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was constructed by the Chimu culture around 1,300 AD. You will enjoy a private guided tour of the complex and learn about the fascinating Chimu culture and history.
- You’ll continue on to the nearby beach town of Huanchaco, a fishing village, where you will see the traditional totora boats used by fishermen.
- The last stop of the tour is the archeological complex known as El Brujo, an ancient center of commerce for more than 10 pre-Inca cultures. The complex comprises decorated walls and the mummy of a tattooed woman dating from 450 AD.
- After a long and exciting day, you’ll be taken back to your Trujillo hotel.
Day 5 : Arrival to Chiclayo & Sipan Tour

- After breakfast, meet your private transfer for your trip to Chiclayo. Once you get there, one of our representatives will take you to your Chiclayo hotel to settle in.
- After a short rest, you’ll start your private guided tour of the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipán, which exhibits some of the treasures found in the tomb of the Lord of Sipán in 1987. Sipán was a large ceremonial and burial complex built by the Moche culture in approximately 250 AD. The complex is especially valuable thanks to its excellent state of preservation and protection from grave robbers and looters.
- The impressive three-story museum is one of the newest in the world. Its pyramidal shape is similar to the tomb where the Lord of Sipán was discovered with his ancient treasures. The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum is the largest museum dedicated to just one archeological discovery and it also includes the most ample intact collection of gold relics in the Americas.
- In the evening you’ll return to your Chiclayo hotel and have the evening to relax and explore the city at your leisure.
Day 6 : Valley of the Pyramids Tour

- After breakfast at your hotel, youll begin a full-day guided tour of the Valley of the Pyramids. Youll visit the archaeological complex of Tucume, built by the Sican in 1,000 AD. The vast brick pyramids were an important regional center for successive civilizations, and today are considered to be deeply spiritual, even fearsome places among local people.
- In the evening, stroll around the city and enjoy your last day along the Peruvian coast before heading inland to Cusco.
Day 7 : Arrival to Cusco & Cusco Tour

- You’ll wake up early for your flight to Cusco. You will be met at the Cusco airport by a Peru For Less representative who will take you to your Cusco hotel. As you begin to approach the historic center of Cusco, you will see examples of Spanish colonial architecture built upon the remains of ancient Inca walls. After arriving at your hotel, we advise you rest for a while to help yourself adjust to the altitude.
- Your exploration of this remarkable city starts in the early afternoon with an expert guided Cusco tour. You will visit Cusco’s most important historical and archeological sites, including the Cusco Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas (the main square), and the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.
- You will return to your Cusco hotel in the late afternoon. Spend the evening at your leisure.
Day 8 : Sacred Valley Tour

- Today you’ll enjoy a private tour of the Sacred Valley, where the locals maintain ancient customs such as raising cuy (guinea pigs), making chicha (a fermented corn drink), weaving beautiful textiles, and using traditional agricultural techniques to farm.
- You'll visit the lively and colorful market of Pisac, as well as the remarkable archeological site that sits hundreds of feet above the town. Agricultural terraces adorn the mountainsides and a ceremonial center sits at the top. A path leads to the peak and very well-preserved temples.
- The day will conclude at the impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo, one of the few places where the Incas were able to defeat the Spanish in battle. These magnificent ruins provide a great vantage point to look out over the valley. The streets around Ollantaytambo’s main plaza, laid out by Inca stonemasons over five centuries ago, are a superb example of Inca urban planning.
- Tonight you will stay at a peaceful hotel in the tranquil Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Day 9 : Machu Picchu Tour

- In the morning you will take a first-class train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. Then you’ll take the 20-minute bus drive up to the ruins, which are secluded on top of a mountain.
- A guide will take you through the complex, where you will visit the agricultural and residential sections of the ruins, the Temple of the Sun, several impressively engineered water fountains, the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Condor, and many other areas.
- You’ll return to Aguas Calientes to spend the night in the beautiful Machu Picchu region.
Day 10 : Free Day in Machu Picchu

- Today you'll have the chance to return to the Machu Picchu ruins on your own and explore them further at your leisure. You can climb up to the Sun Gate, the entrance to Machu Picchu from the Inca Trail; cross the Inca bridge; or just enjoy the atmosphere of this grand site. You can also choose to hike the majestic Huayna Picchu mountain that forms the iconic backdrop to Machu Picchu. (Ask your travel advisor about purchasing tickets for Huayna Picchu).
- In the late afternoon, you'll head out to the train station for your return to Cusco. Make sure to be at the train station 30 minutes prior departure. You will be met at the Cusco train station and taken to your confirmed hotel. Enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Lima Walking Tour Around Plaza San Martin
During the presidencies of Augusto Leguía (1919-1930) and José Manuel Odría (1948-1956), the Historic Center of Lima felt the breath of modernization. Leguía celebrated the first 100 years of independence with the construction of Plaza San Martin, and a true financial center for Lima was erected. Under Odría, the avenues Abancay and Tacna were widened, and ministries moved to contemporary tower blocks.
This 3-hour walking tour begins and ends at Plaza San Martin. You will first explore all the buildings around this lovely square, which formed the center of Peruvian nightlife until the 1970s. Visitors will then walk along the Parque Universitario to busy Avenida Abancay and explore the financial district around the streets Azangaro, Lampa and Ucayali, before turning back through Jiron de la Union to Plaza San Martin.
Around 30 buildings are appreciated in detail, including the head offices of banks and insurance companies and two hotels, Bolivar and Maury. Both of these hotels claim to have invented Peru’s national drink, the delicious Pisco Sour. Chicama Valley Tour
The tour leaves Trujillo on the Pan-American Highway and travels north towards the Chicama Valley, where you will see extensive sugar cane plantations. This is where the majority of Peru’s sugar production takes place, with the two principal factories being Cartavio and Casa Grande. Before arriving to Chocope, you will turn west towards “El Brujo” (the Witch) where there is an archaeological complex formed by 3 pyramids: Cao, Partida, and Prieta. In the Prieta pyramid, the researcher Junnius Bird found evidence of human occupation dating to over 5,000 years ago. In the Cao pyramid, polychromatic paintings have been found on several levels representing prisoners, dancers, fishing scenes, war scenes and depictions of Moche mythology. In 2006, archaeologists found a tattooed mummy dubbed the Lady of Cao and carbon-dated to 450 A.D. The Lady of Cao, thought to have been an important warrior or even an important Moche leader, challenges assumptions that the Moche society was exclusively male-dominant.

Batan Grande and the Pomac Forest
50km to the east of Chiclayo is Batan Grande, nicknamed the “Pantry of Gold.” It served as the religious center and funeral grounds for the Sican culture. In 1937, sensational discoveries were made, such as the decorated Golden Tumis (ceremonial knives) and many other pieces. Many of these ancient Peruvian pieces have attracted international attention. Situated in the Milk River Valley, Batan Grande is located within what is now the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary and includes around 30 dispersed pyramids. There is also a small onsite museum. Within the forest is a huge mesquite tree, locally known as the Millennium Tree. Across the Milk River, the Japanese archaeologist Izumi Shimada uncovered two tombs in the Parrot Pyramid filled with numerous gold pieces.
