Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, has its western shores in Peru and its eastern shores in Bolivia. In this isolated and magical location, situated at over 12,000 feet above sea level, indigenous lake dwellers build their houses on floating islands made from reeds, just as their ancestors did centuries before. The lake itself is a magical sight, with glistening waters surrounded by breathtaking mountainous landscapes. Whether sailing across the lake or just admiring the sunset from your hotel in Puno, you’ll be astonished by the sheer beauty of this natural wonder.
During this Lake Titicaca vacation, you will visit the handmade islands of Uros and meet the people who built them – truly a remarkable experience not possible anywhere else in the world. The next stop is Taquile Island, famous for its beautiful handwoven textiles and its numerous Inca and pre-Inca ruins. You’ll also get to explore Puno, located on the shores of the lake. At first glance, this small provincial town may not seem like it has much to offer, but it’s a treasure trove of culture and a great place to observe how locals live outside of Peru’s bigger cities.

Day 1 : Arrival to Puno

- Upon arrival to the airport, train station, or bus station, a Peru For Less representative will meet you and take you to your confirmed Puno hotel. If flying to Lake Titicaca, the airport is situated in Juliaca, a 45-minute drive from Puno. The bus and train stations are located directly in Puno’s town center.
- Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and is the main launching point for lake excursions. This area has great importance in history and folklore: legend has it that the Inca creator deity Viracocha (the Sun) emerged from the lake and sent his children, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, to found the Inca dynasty.
- You’ll spend the afternoon of your first day acclimatizing to the region’s high altitude (Puno sits at an average elevation of 12,556 feet or 3,830 meters above sea level) and exploring the lakeside at your leisure.
Day 2 : Lake Titicaca Tour with Uros & Taquile Island Visit

- After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll embark on a full-day tour of Lake Titicaca. This sparkling gem is the highest navigable lake in the world at a height of 12,507 feet (3,812 meters) above sea level.
- Your lake journey will take you to several of the man-made islands of the Uros people. There are an estimated 32 inhabited islands, though the number changes as new islands are made and old ones are abandoned. The islands are constructed using the ancient method of weaving multiple layers of totora reeds into solid mats.
- You’ll continue to the island of Taquile. This island is full of pre-Inca and Inca ruins. The locals who live here are expert craftsmen, and you may want to purchase some one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Interestingly, on this island, it is the men and not the women who have historically worked with woven material. You will be guided to all of the most important sites on the island such as the main plaza and the market.
- After the tour of Taquile, you will have time for lunch. Then, you will board the boat and sail back to Puno.
- Once in Puno, you have the remainder of the evening to relax at your hotel or enjoy Peru’s traditional cuisine in one of the local restaurants. See our Puno Travel Guide for more city information and recommendations.
Day 3 : Departure from Puno

- After breakfast at your hotel, you might want to take one last stroll along the lake before meeting your transfer back to the airport, train station, or bus station. If you are traveling to Cusco, we strongly recommend taking the Puno to Cusco train, known as the Andean Explorer, a train journey that offers spectacular views of the region’s landscape.

Sillustani Tour
On the outskirts of Puno you will find mysterious pre-Inca ruins called Chullpas (funeral towers). They sit on the windswept altiplano on a peninsula in Lake Umayo at Sillustani. The Colla people, a warrior tribe that spoke Aymara, buried their elite in giant cylindrical tombs, some as tall as 12 meters high (40 ft.). The stonemasonry is exquisite (many archaeologists and historians find them more complex and superior even to Inca engineering) and the structures form quite an impression on such a harsh landscape.
*Since the Sillustani group tour is an afternoon tour, it may be necessary to book an extra night in Puno. This depends on each individualized itinerary.

Overnight on Lake Titicaca - Amantani Island or Luquina community
Enjoy an overnight stay with an Andean family on the Amantani Island of Lake Titicaca.
Day 1: Your day will begin with an early morning pickup at 8 a.m. from your hotel and transfer to the pier where you will board your boat. After a 40-minute boat ride you will reach the man-made reed Islands of Uros. Here you will learn how the ancient Aymara people constructed these islands to escape persecution from Inca soldiers. After learning about their culture and lifestyle, you will board your boat once more and sail toward Amantani Island or to the Luquina community.
Amantani Island stay: On Amantani, your host family will greet you upon arrival and take you to your new home for lunch and a short rest. In the late afternoon you will enjoy a tour of the ruins located at the top of the island. From this point you will be able see both the Peruvian and Bolivian shores of Lake Titicaca. From there you will return to your home for dinner and a short rest before attending the optional party of music and dancing with Amantani residents.
Luquina community stay: Your hosts on Luquina Islands belong to the Aymaran community. They will welcome you into their home, where you will have the unique opportunity to discover their traditional way of life. Off the beaten path, this small community is located amidst truly breathtaking scenery. After settling in and meeting your host family, you’ll have the chance to hike to the top of the nearby mountain to enjoy a spectacular sunset on Lake Titicaca. You’ll come back for dinner and evening with your family.
Day 2: Enjoy an early breakfast before you are back on the boat for the trip to Taquile Island. Here you will hike towards the main town for a delicious lunch. Then you will continue on a challenging* hike to the other side of the island where your boat to Puno awaits.
It is important for travelers to remember that while the Lake Titicaca homestays are a beautiful and worthwile experience, they should be prepared for very basic accommodations and meals. The houses of the Amantani people are humble but warm and clean. In some cases, bathrooms are outhouses.
*This part of the tour features many up and downhill stairs. Though not extremely strenuous, the region’s high altitude may make the journey difficult for some. Therefore this tour might not be appropriate for travelers with walking difficulties and/or senior citizens.
