After the Earthquake

Lima/ Ica/ Nazca (7 days/ 6 nights) - From $ 999 € 670 £ 505

This program involves tourism, volunteering and direct contact with the nature and wildlife of the province of Ica, a beautiful desert area, home to both the Nazca lines and Paracas Bay. The mystery of the Nazca lines has captivated the minds of scientists for years: how did a Stone Age culture make dozens of enormous anthropomorphic designs in the sands of the desert if they can only really be seen from the air? Despite 50 years of study there is still no proven theory as to their origin and purpose. Meanwhile, the Paracas Bay area is known for its fantastic abundance of wildlife - a short boat ride from the mainland brings you to islands inhabited by colonies of thousands of sea birds and sea lions.

This trip will be combined with a unique chance to give something back to the communities you visit: in Lima you will have a half day at an orphanage; while in Ica you will have a day and a half assisting in the post-Earthquake reconstruction efforts; and both projects will receive a donation on your behalf.

Itinerary and Prices

Day 1: Arrive to Lima

After arriving at the airport, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you will get the chance to rest and relax after your flight.
In the afternoon, you’ll receive a brief orientation giving you a taste of Peruvian history and culture, and information about the volunteer activities you will undertake during your trip.
Later, you will get the opportunity to visit the city, try some of the culinary wonders of the country, or just relax at the hotel and prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 2: City Tour in Lima / Start of Volunteer Activity

After breakfast, you will be taken on a city tour taking in the Plaza Mayor, the gorgeous, baroque inspired Cathedral, and Lima’s ever-lively streets.
In the afternoon, you will initiate your volunteer activities visiting a local orphanage for street children. There you will participate in different activities with the children, such as a ‘clown show’ or puppet show (you will perform yourselves!), or some quieter pursuits such as story-telling and book painting.
At the end of the day, you will return to your hotel in Miraflores.

Day 3: Transfer to Ica / Volunteer Activity in Ica

You will take a bus down the PanAmerican Highway to Ica using one of the country’s premier bus-lines. Along the way, you will see the urban landscape change to desert.
After settling into your hotel in Ica, you will be taken to a construction site to begin your volunteer activity, assisting in the re-building of the city, which was devastated by the earthquake of August 2007.
After an invigorating, productive day, you will return to your hotel to spend the night.

Day 4: Visit to Ballestas Islands / Volunteer Activity

After an early rise, you will take a boat ride into the undisturbed natural beauty of the Ballestas Islands, home to a myriad of bird species, including the majestic Condor, as well as abundant fish and sea mammals. It is also here that guano (bird droppings) is collected in vast quantities to be used as fertilizer
During the afternoon, you will continue to assist the local people in the reconstruction process of their city, torn apart by the Earthquake.

Day 5: Transfer to Nazca

After a relaxing morning, you will take a bus to Nazca. Just outside the town, colossal figures in the sand stretch across the desert floor, and will surely amaze you.
After your transfer to the hotel, you will get the chance to explore the friendly little town.

Day 6: Nazca Lines Overflight/ Return to Lima

Early in the morning, you will take a small airplane and fly over the Nazca lines to gain a panoramic view of the enormous figures in the sand - the spider, the monkey, the bird, among others.
You'll return to Lima in the late afternoon by bus where you can relax, dine, or dance the night away in this cosmopolitan city of many wonders and colors.

Day 7: Lima

Transfer to airport for flight back home.
