Description
The Sandoval Lake Lodge is run by a partnership between Peru Verde, a local non-profit organization working for the conservation of Peru, and 5 local Brazil-nut gathering communities. The goal of the association is to protect the majestic Sandoval Lake and its wildlife while promoting responsible eco-tourism.
The lodge itself offers rustic yet comfortable accommodations in the heart of the jungle. This eco-minded initiative focuses on offering the most intimate encounters with the rainforest and its inhabitants, thanks to its small group policy and extremely personalized service. It is constructed exclusively with local materials to perfectly blend into its spectacular natural surroundings. For example, the main material used is ecologically-harvested mahogany driftwood carried downriver from the nearby Manu National Reserve by seasonal floods.
The superb location of the lodge provides for unique opportunities to observe the Amazon’s exotic wildlife at its best, either early in the morning or late at night. Hundreds of species of birds, insects, and others including the famous black caiman can be spotted in and around the lake. The lake is also home to one of the largest populations of giant otters, one of the most impressive and endangered species of Peru.
Main activities of course include lake excursions, but the lodge is also surrounded by 15 miles of rainforest hiking trails. All tours and hikes are led by expert naturalist guides who reside year round at the lodge and are familiar with all the secrets of the jungle.
Room Amenities
The Sandoval Lake Lodge comprises 25 comfortable and elegantly furnished rooms. Each guest room is fit for double occupancy and equipped with hot showers, electricity (at certain times of day), fans, and comfortable bedding. All rooms and common spaces at the lodge are screened-in and equipped with electricity as well as candles and kerosene lamps.
Lodge Services & Facilities
All meals are served in the lodge’s cozy dining room, which also serves as a bar and reading room. During their stay, guests are treated to some of the best Peruvian dishes prepared with fresh local products by expert chefs. Vegetarian and specialized dishes are also available upon request. There are several inviting sitting areas around the lodge from where guests can enjoy splendid views of the Sandoval Lake.
