The last thing you’d expect to see cruising down a river in the Peruvian Amazon is a boat named Henry with a tiger and Superman painted on it. But Peru is full of surprises and a number of eclectically decorated boats like the one featured in this week’s photo are actually a nontraditional way for travelers to get to Iquitos.

In 2011 Paul Vallejos boarded Henry The Boat at the port of Yurimaguas and made the river voyage to Peru’s principal northern jungle city, Iquitos. This no-frills ride has a 4 day/3 night itinerary and locals often outnumber foreigners. While the trip is a far call from luxurious, the jungle views from the boat decks must be beautiful!

Flying to Iquitos is much faster. For more information about exploring the Amazon in Peru, give our expert travel advisors at Peru For Less a call!
