Whereas some destinations offer “culture” on display in a museum exhibit, in Peru, the thriving indigenous culture is available not just for distant observation, but for up-close interaction and appreciation. And here, on the beaches of Lima‘s Costa Verde, culture is just a toe’s tip away.

Photographer Ana Castañeda Cano captured the essence of Peru’s cultural contrast and connectivity in this photo, which won first prize at the Concurso de fotografia, UNIFEM Región Andina in Quito, Ecuador, 2010.
