This Lost City of the Inca is without a doubt one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Americas. Sitting at a staggering 8,000 feet above sea level and veiled in the high tropical mists of the Urubamba Valley, Machu Picchu is a breath-taking site which leaves the beholder mystified, humbled, and awed.
Cuzco, the "Home of Gods," as the Incas referred to it, became the capital of one of the largest pre-Colombian empires: known as the Tahuantinsuyo. Its name in Quechua, Qosqo, means "navel of the world" because Cusco served as a hub for the empire.
Carved into the epic landscape of the Andes Mountains is the vast and fertile Sacred Valley. Underneath brilliant blue skies that characterize this verdant region one can still observe age-old villages, millenary traditions and impressive relics of the once mighty Inca Empire.
Founded in 1535 by the Spanish Conquistador Pizarro, Lima is the capital of Peru. The city replaced Cuzco as the capital, and Lima soon became the richest settlement of Spain in the New World. Today Lima is a metropolis of over eight and a half million inhabitants.
Arequipa, known as the White City, is a peaceful colonial city that is situated at 2,325 meters above sea level and surrounded by volcanoes- of which the most famous and highest is El Misti (5,822 meters above sea level).
The region of Puno played a very important role in pre-Inca and Inca times. According to the Inca’s creation myth, Manco Capac, the first Inca, and his wife Mama Ocllo emerged from Lake Titicaca and were instructed by their father, the Sun, to establish the Tahuantinsuyo Empire.
Once used solely by official Inca messengers and nobility, the vast network of roads known as the Inca Trail is now full of exhilarating experiences for the adventurous traveler. This famous section of the trail meanders through a rich and varied landscape of green valleys, staggeringly high mountain passes and wildlife-rich forests before leading trekkers to the grand citadel of Machu Picchu.
Lush jungle lowlands and mist shrouded forest: the Peruvian Amazon is a vast territory teeming with enough wildlife and flora to make a lasting impression on any nature-loving traveler. The simply stunning variety of biodiversity in Manu, Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado is matched only by the diversity of the region’s age-old tribes and customs.
Paracas is a tiny coastal town situated next to one of the most abundant stretches of ocean in the world. It is located in a peaceful bay where visitors can marvel at the wealth of marine wildlife to be found both in the Paracas National Reserve and on the nearby Ballestas Islands.
Peru’s majestic Colca Canyon is the world’s deepest, measuring an astounding 3,400 meters, (11,333 feet) depth-wise. It is also home to the region’s most famous resident, the Andean Condor. The condor - as well as breathtaking vistas of fertile valleys and charming Andean towns - can be appreciated from look-out point Cruz Del Condor.
Once dominated by mighty pre-Inca civilizations, friendly Chiclayo and sunny Trujillo still proudly bear the impressive remnants of awe-inspiring constructions such as the largest mud adobe city in the world, acres of ancient pyramids, and entire tombs uncovered intact.
Just a few hours south of Lima is a vast red desert in which hundreds of enormous drawings lay stretching across the sands. These larger-than-life etchings, known as the Nazca Lines, are as perplexing as they are beautiful, and visitors to the small town of Nazca will have plenty of time to ponder their significance as they soak in some pool-side sunshine.
Winding its way through varied and extreme landscape, the Lares Trek is for the traveler who wishes to venture off the well trodden track and explore a more isolated, untouched region of Andean Peru. Featuring hot springs and traditional villages etched into the fertile valleys along the way, the Lares Trek is a rewarding alternative to the Inca Trail.
