The site of Choquequirao (meaning “Cradle of Gold” in the local Quechua language), is an archaeological complex of enormous significance, hidden deep within the jungle-clad Vilcabamba mountain range of Peru's southern Andes. The site, often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister city, is thought to have been the gateway to the Vilcabamba, the Inca's last refuge during their final resistance of the Spanish conquest. Although the site dwarfs Machu Picchu in scale, and possibly importance, its isolation has spared it from the crowds, and much of the complex remains unexplored.
This Peru trekking adventure offers a chance to approach the site on a quiet and isolated route following the Apurimac River into the Vilcabamba itself, where the region's spectacular landscapes and wilderness environments can be appreciated without disturbance from other visitors. The route promises an exhilarating Peru adventure into the country's mythical and historical heartlands, supported by the best trekking services available.
The Choquequirao to Huanipaca trail is a challenging and demanding Peru trekking route which requires a good level of fitness and prior acclimatization to the altitude, preferably in Cusco. If you have any doubts of your ability to complete this trek, please consult your Travel Advisor and doctor.
