The main gateway to the exotic Peruvian Amazon, Puerto Maldonado is located deep in the heart of the lush Madre de Dios region. Full of wild forests, sinuous rivers, and oxbow lakes Puerto Maldonado holds world records in biodiversity for its hundreds of species of ants, butterflies, birds, and other animals. Formerly a center for rubber, wood, gold, and petroleum trade, Puerto Maldonado now thrives on eco-tourism and has a great infrastructure that allows travelers to visit this pristine rainforest.
Jointly owned by Rainforest Expeditions and local communities, the charming Refugio Amazonas jungle lodge is the latest addition to the association’s eco-minded lodges. Opened in 2005, this 32-bedroom lodge is beautifully located in the Tambopata National Reserve, about 3 hours away from Puerto Maldonado by boat. As it is situated further down the river than many other lodges, opportunities to spot wildlife are greater. You are truly in the heart of the Amazon.

Day 1 : Arrival to Puerto Maldonado & Transfer to Refugio Amazonas

- Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado, you will be met at the airport by a Peru For Less representative who will take you to the headquarters of Rainforest Expeditions where you will have the chance to pack your bags for your Amazon tour. Luggage weight on boats is limited so only take necessary items for the length of your stay. The rest of your belongings will be kept safe at the Puerto Maldonado headquarters.
- You will then take a 20-minute drive to the Tambopata River Port, entering the native community of Infierno, where you will board a boat for the 2.5-hour journey to Refugio Amazonas. You will enjoy a box lunch before the trip.
- Upon arrival to the lodge, you will receive a brief orientation on security measures and then have some time to rest and settle into your room before dinner. At night, you will head to the river’s edge with headlights and flashlights to scan the shores and maybe spot the gleaming eyes of caimans (relatives of the alligator).
Day 2 : Oxbow Lake, Canopy Tower & Ethno-botanical Tour

- After breakfast, you will head out for your first Amazon excursion with a boat ride on a nearby oxbow lake. You will paddle around the lake aboard a canoe or catamaran in search for lake wildlife, which includes hoatzin, caimans, and horned screamers. If you’re really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the giant otter family that resides in the lake.
- You will then take a 30-minute walk to the lodge’s 82-foot (25-meter) high canopy tower. Ascend the steep staircase to the top to enjoy magnificent views above the trees. You’re also likely to spot an abundance of birds, including macaws and parrots.
- You’ll return to the lodge for lunch and have some time to rest. In the afternoon, you will take a tour of a local farm owned by the community of Condenado. A variety of Amazon crops are grown here and their uses will be explained by your guide.
- After the farm visit, you will follow the lodge’s ethno-botanical trail with your expert guide who will teach you about the various medicinal uses of the rainforest’s plants.
- Return to the lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening spent to the sounds of the jungle. Lectures about the fascinating Amazon habitat are offered by the lodge’s staff every evening.
Day 3 : Departure from Puerto Maldonado

- After breakfast, depart on the 2.5-hour boat ride to Puerto Maldonado, where you will be able to pick up your belongings at the lodge’s headquarters. You’ll be taken to the airport for your journey home or on to your next destination.

Refugio Amazonas 3*
Opened in 2005, Refugio Amazonas is conveniently located between the Posada Amazonas lodge, and the Tambopata Research Center. Built on a 400 acre (200 hectare) private reserve adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve, Refugio Amazonas offers the opportunity to fully experience and enjoy the Amazon environment and wildlife. Built using wood, wild canes, and palm fronds, each room uses thin canes to create a three-wall enclosure, ensuring privacy but still allowing fresh bouts of tropical air to waft in the rainforest decorated rooms. The fourth wall remains completely open to the lush forest which allows travelers to enjoy the natural beauty of the Peru jungle from up close. Refugio Amazonas blends into the natural surroundings while still offering elements of comfort to create a perfect combination for a tropical Peru vacation.
