Day 1 : Arrival to Sandoval Lake Lodge & Lake Tour

- Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado, you will be met at the airport by a Peru For Less representative and taken on a short 30-minute motor canoe ride on the Madre de Dios River to the trailhead to the Sandoval Lake Lodge. You will disembark the boat and after a short walk through lush forest, you will reach a canal where you board a catamaran that will take you across the lake to the lodge.
- You will have some time to settle in your comfortable cabin and enjoy a delicious lunch before leaving on your first Amazon excursion.
- You will once again board the catamaran with your guide to explore the west end of the oxbow Sandoval Lake and its incredibly rich wildlife. The palm forests surrounding this part of the lake are home to the world’s largest colony of red-bellied macaws, with 500 to 800 birds.
- As dusk falls, watch as the rainforest comes to life and keep an eye out for the black caimans that populate the area. After the tour, return to the lodge to enjoy dinner and a presentation on the Amazon. The most adventurous travelers can also go on a short night walk through the jungle after dinner.
Day 2 : Wildlife Tour on Sandoval Lake

- Wake up before dawn and hop on a boat to admire the sun rising over the sparkling water and observe the giant otters that frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. It’s also a great time to observe some of the 40 bird species that reside around the lake.
- Return to the lodge for breakfast followed by a guided walk through majestically tall Brazil nut trees. You’ll enjoy a demonstration of how local communities collect, open, and commercialize this product, an important economic activity for the local community.
- After lunch back at the lodge, you will once again board the catamaran to start your exploration of the eastern part of the lake. Your expert guide will point out exotic wildlife populating this area, including 5 species of monkeys such as the brown capuchin monkey and the squirrel monkey.
- Return to the lodge for a brief natural history presentation and rest. After dinner, choose between a boat excursion to try to spot caimans or a night walk through the jungle.
Day 3 : Tambopata Reserve Tour or Departure from Puerto Maldonado

Today your itinerary will vary based on if you’ve selected a 3-day or 4-day Amazon adventure.
3-Day Itinerary
- Enjoy an early breakfast at the lodge before departing on a boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado, where you will be transferred to the airport for your journey home or on to your next destination.
4-Day Itinerary
- Rise at dawn for breakfast before taking the catamaran across the lake. On the other side, you’ll take a walk through the lush Mauritia palm forest where hundreds of birds of various species congregate every morning. Parrots, parakeets, macaws, and many other exotic birds use the palm trees as their nests.
- You will cross the lake again and enjoy a guided tour along the trail of the Tambopata Reserve, passing majestic ancient rainforest trees and lianas.
- After lunch back at the lodge, either take the afternoon to relax or explore the many trails of the reserve on your own using the lodge’s trail map. Later on, you will board the catamaran one last time to enjoy a spectacular sunset on the lake.
- Enjoy dinner at the lodge, with new opportunities at night to go looking for caimans or walk through the jungle.
Day 4 : Departure from Puerto Maldonado

- After breakfast, depart on the 30-minute boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado, where you will meet your transfer to the airport for your journey home or on to your next destination.

The lodge is run through a partnership between Peru Verde, a local conservation organization, and five local Brazil nut-gathering families who aim to protect Sandoval Lake and the surrounding rainforest from development.
