Chan Chan Trujillo, Trujillo Travel, Peru Vacations, Peru For Less

Peru is a treasure-trove for archeology lovers. Many of its findings, such as the Royal Tombs of Sipan, the tattooed mummy Lady of Cao and Machu Picchu (all these sites are included in your itinerary below), have several times been the cover of the prestigious National Geographic magazine. Click here for related archeological links and articles. The earliest evidence of human settlements here was discovered in the Pikimachay caves, near Ayacucho, dating back to 12,000 BC, making Peru South America’s earliest settled country. Many archeologists compare Peru’s ancient sites and treasures to those of Mexico, the Mediterranean and Egypt. The pre-Columbian cultures left no written records, only artefacts, gigantic adobe cities and pyramids, stone citadels and mysterious systems of communication and transportation. Archeologists have had to derive historical information from decoration found in ceramics, textiles and other relics of Peru’s distant past.

The Archeological Adventure tour will take you to some of the most important archeological discoveries in Peru. Beginning with the ancient city of Pachacamac, a ceremonial center for 1,000 years before becoming an Inca site, your tour will take you to the northern coast of Peru, where some of the most important Pre-Columbian findings have been made. You will continue with the well-preserved tomb where the Lord of Sipán lies, as well as the adobe Chimu city of Chan Chan (claimed as the largest adobe city in the world) and the iconic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in addition to other historical, cultural and nature sites.

Day 1: Lima
Upon arrival, you will be picked up at the airport and transferred to your comfortable hotel in Lima.
Day 2: Lima

This morning you will have the opportunity to explore Lima, the unique cosmopolitan city that is considered to be the Peruvian melting pot. People from all over Peru have migrated to Lima to form a unique and diverse culture. After lunch, you will take a tour of Huaca Pucllana, ruins situated in the modern neighborhood of Miraflores. The adobe pyramidal structure dates back to 400 AD, when the Maraga culture flourished in Lima. From there you will visit the archeological complex of Pachacamac on a private guided tour. An important Inca site and major city, Pachacamac was already being used as a ceremonial center about 1,000 years before the Inca Empire. Finally, you will be taken back to your comfortable hotel for a relaxing stay.

*Note: Cost of meal not included.

Day 3: Lima / Trujillo
After an early breakfast and an early start, you will take a bus to Trujillo and settle into your comfortable hotel. In the afternoon, you will be taken on a tour of Peru’s 3rd largest city that is also considered the capital of the Marinera dance. You will visit colonial, governmental and religious monuments in the city as well as the Cassinelli Museum, home to invaluable archeological treasures. The day will conclude with an exciting tour of the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon built by the Moche culture many moons ago.
Day 4: Trujillo
In the morning you will visit the ancient abode city of Chan Chan, constructed by the Chimu culture around 1,300 AD. Named by the UN as a World Heritage Site, the ruins cover about 28 sq km. Then you will stop at the beach town of Huanchaco, a fishing village for hundreds of years, where you will see the traditional totora boats still being used by fishermen. The last stop of the tour is the archeological complex known as 'El Brujo', a commercial center for more than 10 cultures; the complex contains extensive friezes with their original paint in tact, decorated walls with high-relief as well as the mummy of a tattooed woman dating from 450 AD. You will be transferred back to your relaxing hotel in Trujillo as you prepare for another day of archeological adventure!
Day 5: Trujillo / Chiclayo
Arrive in the northern coastal city of Chiclayo and be transferred to your hotel before an exhilarating tour of the Lord of Sipán complex.
Day 6: Chiclayo
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will be taken on a tour of the spectacular Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum that features the exclusive findings of the Moche society, unearthed in 1987. Constructed in the shape of the Moche pyramid where the Lord of Sipán was discovered with his treasures, the impressive three-story, six-million dollar museum is one of the newest in the world. The largest museum dedicated to just one archeological discovery, the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum also includes the most ample intact finding of gold relics in the Americas. Next, you will be taken to the Tucume complex (Valley of the Pyramids), a massive compound which includes 26 adobe pyramids that were built by the Sicán civilization around 1,000 A.D.
Day 7: Arrive in Cuzco, Afternoon City Tour
You will be transferred to the airport for an early flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival to the ancient hub of the Incan empire, you will be taken to your cozy hotel nestled in the clouds. In the early afternoon you will be taken on a city tour on which you will visit the main Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas (main plaza), Qoricancha- the Inca Temple of the Sun, the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, the Pucapucara ruins and the Tambo Machay Inca springs. Upon your return in the late afternoon, you will have time to relax and eat in one of Cuzco's many restaurants, where you can enjoy the local cuisine as well as the hospitality of the local people.
Day 8: Sacred Valley
After breakfast, you will be taken on a private tour of the Sacred Valley, where the locals have maintained many ancient customs such as raising cuy (guinea pigs), making chicha (a fermented corn drink), weaving beautiful textiles and agricultural cultivation. Next you are off to the Inca citadel of Pisac which sits high above the village on a triangular plateau. Agricultural terraces adorn the side of the mountain while a ceremonial center sits at the top. A path on the mountain leads to very well-preserved temples. There you will have the opportunity to visit the local market to examine and procure the beautiful handicrafts that the locals make, while also observing the array of ethnic dress worn as part of the local heritage. You will also visit the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo, one of the few places where the Incas were able to defeat the Spanish in battle. Tonight you will stay at a peaceful hotel in the tranquil Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Day 9: Machu Picchu
This morning you will take the first-class train to Machu Picchu and tour the awe-inspiring Inca ruins. A guide will take you through the complex where you will visit the agricultural and industrial sections of the ruins, the temple of the sun, several impressively engineered water fountains, the Intihuatana (the Inca sundial), the temple of the condor, and many other areas of the expansive archaeological complex. That night you will stay in a comfortable Machu Picchu hotel.
Day 10: Train back to Cuzco
You will take a train back to the city of Cuzco, enjoying the breathtaking views along the journey. From the train station, you will be transferred to your hotel in Cuzco for your last night in this enchanting city.
Day 11: Transfer Out
