‘From my experience, constantly traveling to Cuzco, and having lived there, and after being in touch with thousands of travelers, this is the best possible itinerary I could come up with. I like this itinerary so much that I named it after my grandmother, who was born in 1920, and still lives in a small town outside of Cuzco. The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cuzco also have great restaurants to offer you, but I have not included a dining tour, as you can easily walk or take a cab to the best restaurants, so you will receive a dining guide before your arrival in Peru.’

| Day 1: Cuzco / Sacred Valley | |||||||||||||||||||||
| You will arrive in Lima and be transferred to your comfortable hotel located in the legendary Sacred Valley, the source of agricultural products for the city of Cuzco since Inca times. After settling in, you may wish just to relax in the hotel, acclimating to the altitude while enjoying the majestic scenery, dominated by the imposing peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range. If you have the energy, the local town is well worth exploring with the likelihood of hearing the language of the Incas, Quechua, being spoken as you wander around. Tonight, you can try some of the culinary specialties of the region before a peaceful night’s rest. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 2: Sacred Valley | |||||||||||||||||||||
| After breakfast, you will be taken on a private tour through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to see their awe-inspiring stone structures, which echo the past to this day. These remain important archeological sites for researchers, and still circumvent the lands used by the locals for agriculture. After visiting the ruins, you will return to town, where you will dine and get a chance to rest in your hotel. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 3: Sacred Valley | |||||||||||||||||||||
| A short car ride away from the Sacred Valley will take you to the fascinating ruins of Moray - believed to have been an agricultural research centre for the Inca Empire. There you will see a set of downward spiraling terraces of stone worked into the ground in spectacular fashion. Layer after layer, you will descend into the circular center at the bottom, where pasture and regional flowers grow and many regional birds stop by and visit. You will also get the option to take a horseback ride around the site! Next you will be taken to the Salas Salt Mines, an astounding spectacle of numerous, white drying pools, used by the Incas to extract the natural salt from the mountain stream. In the evening, you will return to your hotel in the Sacred Valley, where you will rest and prepare for tomorrow’s journey. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 4: Sacred Valley/ Machu Picchu | |||||||||||||||||||||
| The next day, after breakfast, you will take the train to Machu Picchu, where you will witness first-hand the majestic ruins of the Inca citadel. After passing through the main entrance to the ruins you come across the numerous buildings with intricate designs and very complex stone masonry. As you climb up a stone pathway, you will reach a building called the Watchman's Hut with a wonderfully impressive view over the ruins and Huayna Picchu towering behind it. At the far end of the ruins, close to Huayna Picchu, is the Sacred Rock. From the Royal Sector you can look straight towards the principle baths and the Temple of the Sun. From overwhelmingly crafted terraces to artistically constructed temples and buildings, the list goes on and on. At night, you will descend to the local town of Aguas Calientes, where you will rest at a local lodge. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 5: Machu Picchu / Cuzco | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Wake up early or sleep the morning away! You will have the opportunity to rest and visit the local town of Aguas Calientes, or ascend once more to the ruins to explore some more. For the adventurous, a climb up the iconic mountain of Huayna Picchu is a must, as it soars above the surrounding landscape, and from which there are unforgettable views of the expanses around you. In the afternoon, you will ride by train back to the city of Cuzco, where you will stay at a local hotel to dine and spend the night. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 6: Cuzco | |||||||||||||||||||||
| After breakfast at the hotel, you finally get the chance to explore the magical city of Cuzco, where many wonders await. During the day, you will join a group city tour to visit some of the beautiful sites around the city: the baroquely-inspired Cathedral marking the advent of Christianity in the Andean world; the dense and colorful local market; and the many delicious restaurants and bars enjoyed by locals and visitors alike! At night, you have the option of enjoying Cuzco’s wild nightlife, or staying at your hotel in readiness for the next day. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 7: Cuzco | |||||||||||||||||||||
| After an early rise, you will have a private tour where you will continue to learn about the history of Cuzco and its people. You will visit the jaw-dropping ruins of Sacsayhuamán, where gigantic structures of rock were conjoined in perfect symmetry. This ruin is an imposing example of Incan military architecture – a fortress built from massive slabs of granite to safeguard the city from possible attacks by the Antis, an invading force from the East. At Tambomachay, you will be able to decide for yourself the original purpose of this ruin: theories include a resting place for the Inca, a hunting ground, or the site of a water cult. The site consists of a number of fountains and a large ceremonial stone bath known as the Bath of the Inca. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 8: Cuzco | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Today will be your chance to visit the many artisan stands where amazingly skilled craftsmen knit beautiful textiles of manifold colors and shapes, give shape to minutely detailed pottery, carvings, jewelry, among many others. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 9: Departure from Cuzco | |||||||||||||||||||||
You will be taken to the airport for your return flight See Hotels
