Day 1 : Arrival to Arequipa & Arequipa Tour

- Upon arrival in Arequipa, you will be met at the airport by one of our representatives who will take you to your confirmed Arequipa hotel where you can relax and take some time to adjust to the altitude. Arequipa boasts a distinctive integration of European and native architectural features in the historic center, a cultural characteristic that placed the city on the map of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2000.
- Meet your guide at your hotel for your Arequipa tour. The tour begins at the bustling San Camilo Market where you can mingle with locals as they do their daily shopping. Next, you will visit Chapel of San Ignacio, as well as the beautiful main square, the Plaza de Armas, which is bounded on one side by the soaring neo-classical Cathedral. Your tour will end at one of two famous miradores (lookout points), Mirador de Yanahuara or Carmen Alto, where you can appreciate views of the city framed by the towering Misti Volcano.
- After you are dropped off at your hotel, we highly recommend a visit to the Santa Catalina Monastery during your free time. Alternatively, simply enjoy the pleasures of this beautiful city at your own pace.
- Spend the evening at your leisure, but don’t call it a night before sampling one or two of the regional dishes that have made Arequipa a top culinary destination in Peru. Check out our Arequipa Travel Guide for great restaurant ideas.
Day 2 : Colca Canyon Tour

- Start the day early with a filling breakfast, then set off on a scenic drive to the Colca Canyon by way of Chivay. This ride takes you through spectacular high altitude landscapes and is one of the highlights of your journey into the Andes. As the road climbs up to Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca, keep your eyes open for wild vicuñas (smaller cousins of the llama) and viscachas (small rodents that bear resemblance to rabbits).
- As you descend from Patapampa, the highest pass on this journey situated at 15,300 feet (4,820 meters) above sea level, you’ll begin to see pre-Inca agricultural terraces as well as the Ampato, Sabancaya, and Mismi volcanoes.
- In Chivay, you will visit the main square and stop for lunch (not included) at La Casa de Mamayachi, a top Colca Canyon lodge.
- After lunch, ride to the Calera hot springs, where you can take a dip in the natural thermal baths.
- You’ll be taken to your Colca Canyon hotel and have the afternoon to relax amidst the pastoral beauty of this unique Andean landscape.
Day 3 : Colca Canyon Tour & Arrival to Puno

- Meet your guide for the early morning journey to the Mirador Cruz del Condor, one of the best viewpoints over the canyon and home to the famed condors that gracefully soar on the thermal currents. The road leads past picturesque villages and pre-Inca ruins dominated by the glaciers Ampato and Hualca, both visible in the distance. Once you reach Cruz del Condor, you can stand at the viewpoint and gaze into the depths of the canyon, which stretches nearly 4,000 feet below.
- Return to Chivay where you can enjoy lunch or browse the local market before transferring by land to your Puno hotel, enjoying spectacular views of the Andes on the way.
- Puno is at a higher altitude than Arequipa, and if you haven't already sufficiently acclimatized, it is a good idea to take it easy and rest for a couple of hours after arriving. In the evening you’ll have some free time to explore the area around your Puno hotel and eat in one of the many nearby restaurants. Check out our free Puno Travel Guide for suggestions of great restaurants.
Day 4 : Lake Titicaca Tour

- During your full-day Lake Titicaca tour, you will visit two of its island destinations. The floating islands of Uros are composed of about 32 islands constructed of many layers of totora reeds. Using centuries-old techniques, native residents weave the islands by hand. The inhabitants make their living in different ways: some work in Puno, others live in complete isolation, and still others use tourism as a main source of income and allow tourists to visit during the day or spend the night. While visiting the islands, you will be given the chance to learn about local customs, visit the reed homes, and ride on reed boats. Generally, the families inhabiting the island will have a small display of traditional local handicrafts available for purchase.
- This exciting tour continues to Taquile Island, located about 30 miles by boat from Puno and host to numerous pre-Inca and Inca ruins. The island inhabitants still maintain many time-honored traditions which are reflected in their clothing and beautiful handicrafts. You will visit the most important sites of the island, including the main plaza and the market. After the tour of Taquile, you will have time for lunch. Then, you will board the boat and continue back to Puno.
- Once in Puno, you have the remainder of the evening to relax at your hotel or enjoy the traditional cuisine in one of the local restaurants. See our Puno Travel Guide for more city information and recommendations.
Day 5 : Arrival to Cusco

- After breakfast in your Puno hotel, you will be transferred to the airport, bus terminal, or train station for your transfer to Cusco. You will be picked up in Cusco upon arrival and taken to your comfortable hotel where you can rest before enjoying the Cusco nightlife at your leisure.
- Learn about the differences between the first-class bus to Cusco and the luxury train to Cusco.
Day 6 : Cusco Tour

- Spend the morning at your leisure. This is a good time to explore some of Cusco’s less-visited attractions including the San Pedro Market, the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, or one of many museums, such as the Museum of Pre-Colombian Art, Casa Concha, or the Choco Museum, where you can make your own chocolate from scratch.
- In the afternoon, an expert guide will take you to Cusco’s most historically important attractions. Begin in the Plaza de Armas with a visit to the Cathedral and then walk to Santo Domingo, which built upon the foundations of Cusco’s largest Inca temple. To finish the tour, you’ll go by car to see the Sacsayhuaman fortress and the ruins of Tambomachay, Puka Pukara, and Q'enko.
- Return to your Cusco hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening. Our Cusco Travel Guide includes suggestions for what to see, what to do, and where to eat.
Day 7 : Sacred Valley Tour

- The journey continues with a visit to the Sacred Valley, the spiritual heartland of the Inca Empire. On this full-day tour through Peru’s beautiful countryside, you’ll stop at the most important settlements in the area. You’ll first visit the town of Pisac, renowned for its market where locals come to sell and barter produce and other goods. You will have the chance to browse displays of handicrafts, garments, and jewelry, most of which is fashioned by hand.
- Next is Ollantaytambo, one of the most charming towns in the Sacred Valley. It is an original Inca city that played an important historical role as the last stronghold of the Incas against Spanish incursion, just before their final retreat into the Amazon cloud forest. With your guide, you’ll climb to the top of the fortress to appreciate magnificent views of the entire valley.
- In the evening, you will return to your comfortable Cusco hotel. Spend the evening at your leisure, walking the lamp-lit streets, people-watching on the Plaza de Armas, or dining in one of the excellent Cusco restaurants.
Day 8 : Machu Picchu Tour

- Today you’ll visit Machu Picchu, the “lost city” of the Incas. After an early morning breakfast in Cusco, hop on the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village). The train ride is one of the most dramatic in the world, winding along the course of the Urubamba River and descending from sparse Andean highlands to dense cloud forests and arriving at world wonder Machu Picchu.
- A Peru For Less representative will meet you upon arrival in Aguas Calientes and escort you to the bus station for the 20-minute ride up to Machu Picchu.
- Meet your Machu Picchu tour guide at the entrance to the ruins for a 2 hour guided visit. Your guide will take you to the most important sites, including the Sun Stone, the Room of 3 Windows, and the Sun Temple, while providing the background knowledge you need in order to make this a most fulfilling experience.
- After the official tour ends, you can continue exploring the site. Climb up to the Guardian’s Hut for iconic pictures of Machu Picchu.
- Ride the bus back down to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco. You may also choose to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes in order to maximize your time in Machu Picchu. Speak to your travel advisor for more details.
- Our Machu Picchu Travel Guide includes more information about Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes.

The Inca archaeological site of Moray is the oldest known horticultural experimental center in the world. Each terraced level has a different micro-climate in which different crops can be grown. Sillustani Tour
On the outskirts of Puno you will find mysterious pre-Inca ruins called Chullpas (funeral towers). They sit on the windswept altiplano on a peninsula in Lake Umayo at Sillustani. The Colla people, a warrior tribe that spoke Aymara, buried their elite in giant cylindrical tombs, some as tall as 12 meters high (40 ft.). The stonemasonry is exquisite (many archaeologists and historians find them more complex and superior even to Inca engineering) and the structures form quite an impression on such a harsh landscape.
*Since the Sillustani group tour is an afternoon tour, it may be necessary to book an extra night in Puno. This depends on each individualized itinerary.

Overnight on Lake Titicaca - Amantani Island or Luquina community
Enjoy an overnight stay with an Andean family on the Amantani Island of Lake Titicaca.
Day 1: Your day will begin with an early morning pickup at 8 a.m. from your hotel and transfer to the pier where you will board your boat. After a 40-minute boat ride you will reach the man-made reed Islands of Uros. Here you will learn how the ancient Aymara people constructed these islands to escape persecution from Inca soldiers. After learning about their culture and lifestyle, you will board your boat once more and sail toward Amantani Island or to the Luquina community.
Amantani Island stay: On Amantani, your host family will greet you upon arrival and take you to your new home for lunch and a short rest. In the late afternoon you will enjoy a tour of the ruins located at the top of the island. From this point you will be able see both the Peruvian and Bolivian shores of Lake Titicaca. From there you will return to your home for dinner and a short rest before attending the optional party of music and dancing with Amantani residents.
Luquina community stay: Your hosts on Luquina Islands belong to the Aymaran community. They will welcome you into their home, where you will have the unique opportunity to discover their traditional way of life. Off the beaten path, this small community is located amidst truly breathtaking scenery. After settling in and meeting your host family, you’ll have the chance to hike to the top of the nearby mountain to enjoy a spectacular sunset on Lake Titicaca. You’ll come back for dinner and evening with your family.
Day 2: Enjoy an early breakfast before you are back on the boat for the trip to Taquile Island. Here you will hike towards the main town for a delicious lunch. Then you will continue on a challenging* hike to the other side of the island where your boat to Puno awaits.
It is important for travelers to remember that while the Lake Titicaca homestays are a beautiful and worthwile experience, they should be prepared for very basic accommodations and meals. The houses of the Amantani people are humble but warm and clean. In some cases, bathrooms are outhouses.
*This part of the tour features many up and downhill stairs. Though not extremely strenuous, the region’s high altitude may make the journey difficult for some. Therefore this tour might not be appropriate for travelers with walking difficulties and/or senior citizens.
