Explore the best of Peru’s cultural, natural, and historical highlights during this customized 11-day Peru tour package. This vacation will take you to Peru’s wildlife-filled coast, across the highlands, and deep into the Andes.
Peru’s pre-Columbian past includes the mighty Inca Empire, but other cultures and civilizations also made their mark in the long centuries before the Incas came to power. This history-rich Peru trip includes pre-Columbian sites such as the Nazca Lines, giant geoglyphs carved into the earth and best seen from high above. Spend the night in Paracas and then take a bout tour of the Ballestas Islands, renowned for the marine wildlife concentrated on the rocky shores of the coast. You’ll have a chance to see boobies, cormorants, sea lions, and even Humboldt penguins.
This Peru tour will also provide you with a comprehensive overview of the country’s modern culture, food, and architecture with a visit to bustling Lima and lively Arequipa. Both Lima and Arequipa are epicenters of the gastronomic boom in Peru and the two cities also boast streets lined with elegant architecture, a vibrant range of cultural offerings, and a broad collection of museums.
Peru’s most famous highlight, Machu Picchu, provides the crowning touch to this incredible adventure. You will travel to Cusco, where the powerful Inca Empire based itself to govern a wide swath of South America, until the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century. Machu Picchu was a sacred city for the Inca, but a remote location in the Andean cloud forest of Peru protected it from gold-hungry Spaniards. A trip to Machu Picchu, rediscovered 100 years ago after hundreds of years of seclusion, is a perfect end to this comprehensive voyage through Peru.

Day 1 : Arrival to Lima & Lima Tour

- You will be picked up at the airport by a Peru For Less representative and taken to your confirmed Lima hotel. After a short rest, you’ll meet your English-speaking guide for your exciting tour of Lima, which will take you to the city’s main historical, religious, and contemporary sites.
- The tour starts at the Huaca Pucllana ruins in the Miraflores neighborhood. The structure is an enormous adobe pyramid dating from the 4th century A.D., which still stands amidst Lima’s most modern district.
- Next, you will go to Lima’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will admire the Plaza Mayor (the central square), which is surrounded by 5 important buildings: the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishop´s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Palace of Lima.
- You’ll then travel a few blocks to the San Francisco Monastery, famous for its catacombs where over 250,000 bones rest.
- Your tour of Lima will end with a visit to the traditional residential areas of the city, including San Isidro, Miraflores, and Larcomar.
- You’ll have the evening to spend at your leisure. We recommend a stroll through the scenic Parque del Amor (Park of Love) above the cliff near Larcomar, a mall built into the jagged cliffs of Lima’s coastline. Check out our Lima Travel Guide for restaurants and shopping recommendations.
Day 2 : Arrival to Paracas & Nazca Lines Tour

- After breakfast at your hotel, you will be taken to the bus station for your trip to Paracas. You will travel approximately 3 ½ hours aboard a comfortable first class bus. Upon arrival in Paracas, you will be taken to your confirmed Paracas hotel.
- Drop off your luggage and head to the nearby Pisco airport to take off on your exciting flight over the Nazca Lines. Built between 500 BC and 500 AD, the Nazca Lines are a World Heritage Site and have been carefully studied for half a century but still continue to perplex researchers. Many scientists believe the lines had some astronomical function for the Nazca civilization, although other more colorful theories abound. During the flight, you will see famous glyphs such as the condor, the hummingbird, and the monkey. See our Nazca Travel Guide for more in-depth information on the Nazca Lines.
- After you touch back down to earth, you’ll be taken back to your Paracas hotel, where you can relax and ponder the mysterious Nazca Lines as you enjoy a beautiful sunset over the Paracas Bay.
Note: Flights from Pisco to Nazca require a minimum of two passengers. Please contact your travel advisor for single passenger inquiries.
Due to the relatively small size of planes operating Nazca Lines tours, restrictions apply for clients who are 100kg (220lbs) or over.
Day 3 : Ballestas Islands Tour & Return to Lima

- Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before departing on an adventurous boat trip across the Paracas Bay to the Ballestas Islands, where you will be able to spot sea lions, seals, penguins, guano birds, and turtles (rarely found at this latitude). The boat tour is approximately 2 hours in duration.
- On the way to the islands, you’ll have a chance to spot the Candelabra, a candlestick-shaped glyph stretching 595 feet (181 meters) in length that was etched into the rocky soil many centuries ago. The exact meaning and significance of the Paracas Candelabra are under debate.
- During the tour, you can get up close and personal with marine birds and sea lions. Some of the unique bird species you might see include the Humboldt Penguin and the Peruvian Booby which survive only on the Humboldt Current, as well as the Guanay Cormorant and the Red-legged Cormorant. Depending on the season, you’ll see sea lions playing with their young or simply frolicking on the rocks.
- After your boating excursion, you will be transferred to the bus station to return to Lima for the night. After you check in to your hotel, you will have the evening in Lima to enjoy at your leisure.
Day 4 : Arrival to Arequipa & Arequipa Tour

- breakfast, you’ll take a morning flight to Arequipa, often called the White City due to its white buildings constructed of sillar, a white volcanic rock.
- Upon arrival to the city, you will be greeted at the airport by one of our representatives who will take you to your confirmed Arequipa hotel. Here you will be able to relax and adjust to the altitude before your afternoon city tour.
- Meet your guide at your hotel for your Arequipa tour. You’ll start at Mercado Camilo, a bustling market where you can to mingle with locals as they do their daily shopping. Next, you will visit San Ignacio Chapel, known as the Sistine Chapel of Peru for its ornate decoration. You’ll also swing by the Plaza de Armas, where the neo-classical Cathedral stands on one corner. Your tour will end at one of two famous miradores (lookout points) that overlook the city and its suburbs.
- Although not included as part of your Arequipa tour, we highly recommend a stop at the Santa Catalina Monastery, a convent that once housed 500 nuns and other residents. As the sun begins to set, you can climb the stairs to the roof deck to see an incredible panorama of the cityscape with the volcano El Misti as a backdrop over the city.
- Spend the evening as you wish. Sample the delicious local cuisine, which has brought well-earned fame to Arequipa; our Arequipa Travel Guide includes great restaurant ideas.
Day 5 : Colca Canyon Tour

- Today you embark on a Colca Canyon tour. Be sure to start the day with a filling breakfast. From your Arequipa hotel, you’ll set off on a scenic drive to the Colca Canyon. The drive takes you past the stark highland landscapes of the Andes. As the road climbs up to Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, you might see wild vicuñas, visachas, and other local critters.
- At the highest point of your journey, you’ll reach Patapampa Pass, located at a breathtaking 15,300 feet (4,820 meters) above sea level. On the descent to Chivay, you’ll begin to see pre-Inca agricultural terraces that characterize the landscape of the canyon. You’ll also see the Ampato, Sabancaya, and Mismi volcanoes towering in the distance.
- In Chivay, you will visit the tiny main square and then make a stop for lunch at La Casa de Mamayachi, a cozy Colca Canyon lodge.
- In the early afternoon, you’ll ride to the Calera Hot Springs, renowned for the therapeutic effects of the thermal water. You can either take a dip in the natural baths or just take in the stunning landscape.
- In the afternoon, you’ll be taken to your Colca Canyon hotel, where you can continue to relax amidst the pastoral beauty of this inimitable Andean landscape.
Day 6 : Colca Canyon Tour & Return to Arequipa

- For the best chance to see the majestic Andean condor take flight over the Colca Canyon, head to Mirador Cruz del Condor. You’ll meet your guide early this morning to travel to this viewpoint. The journey there is quite scenic, winding past picturesque villages and between pre-Inca ruins and dominated by the glacier-peaked mountains of Ampato and Hualca. At Cruz del Condor, you’ll have excellent panoramic views of the canyon, which plunges 4,000 feet down and stretches as far as the eye can see.
- Before returning to Arequipa, you’ll stop at Chivay, where you can browse the local market and enjoy lunch. The tour ends at your confirmed Arequipa hotel. You’ll have the remainder of the evening to explore the city or just relax.
Day 7 : Arrival to Cusco

- Enjoy breakfast in your Arequipa hotel, and then meet your transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco. In Cusco, you will be picked up on arrival and transferred to your comfortable Cusco hotel. The city is at slightly higher altitude than Arequipa, so you may want to spend the remainder of the day acclimatizing. The Cusco nightlife is quite vibrant with many options for casual and fine dining.
Day 8 : Cusco Tour

- Enjoy a guided tour of Cusco city and the surrounding archaeological sites. In town, highlights include Cusco Cathedral and Qoricancha, where you’ll learn about the history of the Inca Empire before and after the Spanish Conquest. Your guide will also take you to the most important ruins around Cusco, including Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, and Tambomachay.
- Check out our Cusco Travel Guide for suggestions of what to see and do after your tour. You’ll have the remainder of the afternoon and evening to enjoy Cusco’s many attractions.
Day 9 : Sacred Valley Tour

- The magical Sacred Valley awaits your exploration today. In the company of your expert guide, you’ll travel into the gorgeous countryside on this full day Sacred Valley tour.
- The town of Pisac, which is otherwise very quiet, comes to life on Tuesday, Thursdays, and on weekends with a huge market on the central plaza. (On other days, there’s still an artisan market, but it’s smaller). You’ll have a chance to see local agricultural products as well as handicrafts, jewelry, textiles, and garments including alpaca sweaters, scarfs, and gloves.
- The picturesque town and impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo are a Sacred Valley tour highlight. Ollantaytambo is a “living Inca city,” originally founded as the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti and continually inhabited since then, surviving even the last attacks of Spanish conquistadors before the Inca’s final retreat into the Amazon jungle. For incredible views of the valley, climb the stairs to the top of the fortress.
- You’ll return to Cusco via the town of Chinchero, located on a high plateau and boasting views of the glacier-capped Veronica, Chicon, and Salkantay mountains. Once back in Cusco, you can enjoy a relaxing evening at your leisure.
Day 10 : Machu Picchu Tour

- On this day of your Peru travel adventure, the highlight is the breathtaking Inca citadel at Machu Picchu. After breakfast at your Cusco hotel, you’ll take a comfortable train from Poroy, just outside the city, and into the Sacred Valley. This is one of the most scenic train rides in the world, descending from highlands to the lush valley floor, following the course of the Urubamba River as the landscape begins to become increasingly lush with vegetation.
- You’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, situated in the Andean cloud forest. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your transfer to walk to the bus station, 5 minutes away on foot. The bus ride up to the mist-shrouded Inca city is 20-25 minutes in duration.
- Meet your expert guide for a 2-hour tour of Machu Picchu that includes the most important constructions in the urban-religious sector. After the tour, you’ll have the option to hike 40 minutes to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), included in a regular Machu Picchu entrance. If you’d like to climb Huayna Picchu, there is an additional fee which must be paid when you purchase a regular entrance. Speak to a travel advisor for more information.
- In the afternoon, you’ll hop on a return train to Cusco. Check out our Machu Picchu Travel Guide for more information on Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes, including restaurants, hotels, and shopping.

Maras Moray Salt Mines Full Day Tour
The Inca archaeological site of Moray is the oldest known horticultural experimental center in the world. Each terraced level has a different micro-climate in which different crops can be grown. The circular terraces descend to 492 feet (150 meters) and the temperature difference between the upper and lower terraces is up to 59F (15C).
Maras, 4 km from Moray, is the site of pre-Inca salineras (salt ponds). Each terraced pond is polygonal in shape; salty water emerges from an underground spring, flows into the ponds, and evaporates with the sun.
