Discover Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands on this amazing 9-day tour package. Starting off in Cusco, considered to be the most impressive pre-conquest city in the Americas, you will visit the pre-Columbian city that served as the capital of the Inca Empire. Then, you’ll travel to Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world. During your trip to Peru, you will also visit numerous other Inca archeological sites and towns within the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Once you’ve taken in Cusco & Machu Picchu, you will travel to Ecuador and journey to the remote Galapagos Islands, isolated nearly 600 miles (1,000 km) off of the coast. In the Galapagos, whether on land or sea, nature’s splendid surprises lurk around every corner. Giant tortoises grunt ancient cries, pink flamingos sparkle on the shores of hidden lagoons, marine iguanas hiss sprays of salt, and tiny penguins dart amongst colorful schools of fish, while elegant tropical birds glide across deep blue skies. These sights and sounds await you on a Galapagos cruise.
The varied flora and fauna of the archipelago makes it difficult to do justice to the ‘Galapagos Experience’ with words alone. The only way to truly appreciate this ‘heaven on earth’ is to see it for yourself.

Day 1 : Arrival to Cusco & Cusco Tour

- A PFL representative will be at the Cusco airport to greet you upon arrival and transfer you to your confirmed Cusco hotel. As you approach the historic center you’ll begin to see examples of Cusco’s distinctive architecture: Spanish colonial buildings erected upon the remains of ancient Inca ones, creating a stunning visual contrast. Cusco sits at over 11,000 feet and since most travelers will be arriving from sea level, we recommend a morning of rest to aid the acclimation process.
- Feel free to begin exploration of the city streets on your own, and then meet your expert guide early in the afternoon for a Cusco tour. Stops include the Cusco Cathedral (filled with ornate wood carvings and paintings and sculptures from the Cusco School of Art, which was most active in the 16th through the 18th centuries) as well as Santo Domingo Church (built on the site of Qoricancha, the Temple of the Sun, which was perhaps the Inca’s most important religious temple). You’ll also venture to the hills above Cusco to see the impressive archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.
- Upon return to your Cusco hotel, enjoy the evening at your leisure. The delicious Peruvian cuisine and the hospitality of the Cusco locals is quite renowned. Our Cusco Travel Guide has a selection of fine Cusco restaurants, as well as bars and lounges where you can enjoy a night out.
Day 2 : Sacred Valley Tour

- No trip to Cusco & Machu Picchu is complete without a tour of the Sacred Valley, the spiritual base of the Inca Empire and a stronghold for Inca rebels after the Spanish conquest of Cusco in 1543. After breakfast in Cusco and in the company of your expert guide, you’ll travel to the town of Pisac, about 40 minutes down the road. As you enter the Sacred Valley, you’ll begin to see the famous agricultural terraces of the Andes that sustained the vast empire. Once in town, you’ll have a chance to browse the Pisac market, renowned for agricultural market as well as its stalls lined with textiles, alpaca garments, and jewelry.
- You’ll continue on to Ollantaytambo, with an optional stop in Urubamba to enjoy a traditional Peruvian lunch. Ollantaytambo was originally the royal estate of the Inca Pachacutec and later served as a fortress against encroaching Spanish soldiers. Today, it is a highlight of a Sacred Valley tour. You’ll have a chance to climb the terraces to the top of a point that looks over the valley and you can also spend some time wandering the original Inca streets next the plaza.
- Your tour will return Cusco and your comfortable hotel. Indulge in the Cusco nightlife or dine in one of the many excellent restaurants featuring Peruvian, Novo-andean, and international cuisine.
Day 3 : Machu Picchu Tour

- Today, with the historical and cultural background of the region established, you’ll journey to the Inca citadel, Machu Picchu. Enjoy breakfast, and then meet your transfer to the train station, located about 20 minutes from the historic center of Cusco. The train ride is as delightful as it is scenic, descending from Andean highlands, following the course of the rushing Urubamba River, and then arriving to the “ceja de la selva”, the point of transition between the mountains and the jungle.
- You’ll arrive to Aguas Calientes (the traveler town at the foot of Machu Picchu), meet your transfer to the bus station, and take a 20-minute ride to the hidden Inca citadel. Here, you’ll meet you expert guide, who will accompany you for the next 2 hours while you tour Machu Picchu and its most amazing features. After the tour, you’ll also have some time for some independent exploration.
- In the afternoon, you will return on the train to Cusco. If desired, you can customize this package to stay the night in Aguas Calientes, giving you the opportunity to spend a second day in Machu Picchu.
- Check out our Machu Picchu Travel Guide for more information on what to see and do during your Peru vacation.
Day 4 : Arrival to Quito

- After breakfast, meet your transfer to the Cusco airport for your flight out to Lima and then to Quito, capital city of Ecuador and transit hub for Galapagos travel. In Quito, you will be picked up at the airport and taken to your comfortable Quito hotel in the center of the city. In the evening, you will receive a briefing for your Galapagos cruise and have the rest of the evening to enjoy Quito’s historical and modern attractions at your leisure.
Day 5 : Begin Galapagos Cruise

- After breakfast in your comfortable Quito hotel, you will be taken to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival in the Galapagos you will be picked up at the airport and taken to your confirmed Galapagos cruise ship.
- After become settled in your Galapagos boat, you will enjoy a briefing by the cruise staff and a delicious welcome dinner to start off your exciting Galapagos cruise.
Day 6 - 8: Galapagos Cruise

- Explore the wonderful Galapagos Archipelago aboard your comfortable cruise ship. Your specific itinerary will depend on the ship that you choose; in all cases, however, you will enjoy land tours to the Galapagos’s most beautiful islands guided by expert naturalists. Some Galapagos boats also offer water activities such as snorkeling or scuba-diving.
- The Galapagos Islands offer some of the best wildlife viewing in the world, not only because the animals themselves are beautiful and interesting, but also because many of the species are virtually fearless. Through a quirk of evolution, large predators failed to evolve here, resulting in the unique sense of security that many of the island’s animal inhabitants display.
- This means: The famous blue-footed booby will perform its awkwardly elegant two-stepped mating dance right under your nose, oblivious to your camera. Mockingbirds will hop onto your shoes. Sea lions will do figure eights to show off their swimming prowess as you snorkel among them.
Day 9 : Departure from the Galapagos

- After your last breakfast aboard your Galapagos cruise ship, you will disembark and meet your transfer to the airport for your flight home or to continue to your next South American destination.
- Browse our full range of Peru travel destinations to see how you can extend your amazing South America vacation.
