Peru's northern coast is an archaeology-lover's paradise. Pre-Columbian ruins, many dating to before the rise of the Inca Empire, are scattered throughout the the region. The numerous adobe pyramids blend into the barren desert landscape, making it difficult to distinguish one from the other. This area was once the center of the Lambayeque, Moche, and Chimu cultures, known for their advanced metallurgy. Now the areas surrounding Chiclayo and Trujillo are primarily agricultural and produce very high quality cotton, rice, and sugar. Day 1 : Arrival to Trujillo & Trujillo City Tour

• A Peru For Less representative will meet you at the airport or bus station in Trujillo and take you to your confirmed Trujillo hotel.
• After a short rest, you will start your adventures with a half-day guided city tour to see all the main colonial, governmental, and religious sites in this beautiful city.

Day 2 : Archeological Sites Tour & Arrival to Chiclayo

• This action-packed day takes you on a full-day tour to many of the area’s best attractions.
• You’ll start with a visit to the colorful Moche Temples of the Sun & Moon and the on-site museum, located right outside of the city. Then you’ll journey to the ancient abode city of Chan Chan, constructed by the Chimu culture around 1,300 AD. This is the largest adobe city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• You’ll continue on to the nearby beach town of Huanchaco, a fishing village, where you will see the traditional totora boats still used by fishermen. After this coastal visit, you’ll continue north to the city of Chiclayo where you’ll spend the night in your selected Chiclayo hotel.

Day 3 : Museum & Túcume Tour & Departure from Chiclayo

• After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll meet your English-speaking guide for a visit to the Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán, arguably one of the best museums in Peru. This modern museum houses discoveries from the tomb of the Lord of Sipán, considered one of the most important archeological findings in Peru. Chicama Valley Tour

The tour leaves Trujillo on the Pan-American Highway and travels north towards the Chicama Valley, where you will see extensive sugar cane plantations. This is where the majority of Peru’s sugar production takes place, with the two principal factories being Cartavio and Casa Grande. Before arriving to Chocope, you will turn west towards “El Brujo” (the Witch) where there is an archaeological complex formed by 3 pyramids: Cao, Partida, and Prieta. In the Prieta pyramid, the researcher Junnius Bird found evidence of human occupation dating to over 5,000 years ago. In the Cao pyramid, polychromatic paintings have been found on several levels representing prisoners, dancers, fishing scenes, war scenes and depictions of Moche mythology. In 2006, archaeologists found a tattooed mummy dubbed the Lady of Cao and carbon-dated to 450 A.D. The Lady of Cao, thought to have been an important warrior or even an important Moche leader, challenges assumptions that the Moche society was exclusively male-dominant.

Tour of the Bruning Museum and Lambayeque

Only 7.5 miles (12 km) from Chiclayo is Lambayeque, a lovely colonial town where you will visit the world renowned National Archaeological and Anthropological Museum “Heinrich Brüning.” The museum’s four stories house a collection of gold, silver, and copper objects from the several cultures that flourished in the region over the past 4,000 years. After the museum you will visit local colonial houses, the longest balcony in Peru at the Logia House, the San Pedro Cathedral, and the main plaza.

Batan Grande & the Pomac Forest

30 miles (50 km) to the east of Chiclayo is Batan Grande, nicknamed the “Pantry of Gold.” It served as religious and funeral grounds in the Sican culture. In 1937 sensational discoveries were made, such as the decorated Golden Tumis (ceremonial knives) and many other pieces from ancient Peru. Many of these pieces have attracted international attention. Situated in the Milk River Valley, Batan Grande is located within what is now the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary and includes around 30 dispersed pyramids. There is also a small onsite museum. Within the forest is a huge mesquite tree, locally known as the Millennium Tree. Across the Milk River, the Japanese archaeologist Izumi Shimada uncovered two tombs in the Parrot Pyramid filled with numerous gold pieces.
