Colonial Metropolis: Lima (3 days / 2 nights)
From $209 €151 £128
Lima is a bustling melting pot of the immigrant and the indigenous, the old and the new, international fast-food chains and traditional Peruvian restaurants, high-rise luxury apartments and squatters' shacks. Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, Lima replaced Cuzco as the capital of Peru and soon became Spain’s richest settlement in the New World. Today, it is home to a third of the Peruvian population. The historical center of Lima holds many interesting sights, such as the catacombs of San Francisco Church, the Museum of Anthropology, the Gold Museum, and the beautiful Plaza de Armas (Main Square). Nearby districts such as Miraflores and Barranco provide plenty of culture and excellent bars, restaurants, and shops.
